10:1-2
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ תֹּולְדֹ֣ת בְּנֵי־נֹ֔חַ
And these are the descendants
of the sons of Noah:
שֵׁ֖ם חָ֣ם וָיָ֑פֶת
Shem, Ham and Jephet,
וַיִּוָּלְד֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם בָּנִ֖ים אַחַ֥ר הַמַּבּֽוּל׃
And their sons, born to them after the flood.
בְּנֵ֣י יֶ֔פֶת
The sons of Jephet:
גֹּ֣מֶר וּמָג֔וֹג וּמָדַ֖י וְיָוָ֣ן וְתֻבָ֑ל
Gomer (Russia) and Magog (Native America / Canada / Alaska ),
and Madai (Media / Iran),
and Javan (Greece) and Tuval (Anatolia / Turkey);
וּמֶ֖שֶׁךְ וְתִירָֽס׃
And Meshech (Caucasians / Eastern Black Sea Region),
and Tiras (Italy / Etruscans);
10:3-4
וּבְנֵ֖י גֹּ֑מֶר
And the sons of Gomer:
אַשְׁכֲּנַ֥ז וְרִיפַ֖ת וְתֹגַרְמָֽה׃
Ashkenaz and Riphat, and Togarmah;
וּבְנֵ֥י יָוָ֖ן אֱלִישָׁ֣ה וְתַרְשִׁ֑ישׁ
And the sons of Javan,
Elisha and Tarshish (Spain),
כִּתִּ֖ים וְדֹדָנִֽים׃
Kittim (Cyprus), and Dodanim;
10:5
מֵ֠אֵלֶּה נִפְרְד֞וּ אִיֵּ֤י הַגֹּויִם֙ בְּאַרְצֹתָ֔ם
From these, they had separated out,
the coasts of the peoples in their countries,
אִ֖ישׁ לִלְשֹׁנֹ֑ו
each according to their language,
לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם בְּגֹויֵהֶֽם׃
by their clans within their nations.
10:6-7
וּבְנֵ֖י חָ֑ם
And the sons of Ham:
כּ֥וּשׁ וּמִצְרַ֖יִם וּפ֥וּט וּכְנָֽעַן׃
Cush (Ethiopia) and Mitzraim (Egypt)
and Phut (Lybia) and Cana’an;
וּבְנֵ֣י כ֔וּשׁ סְבָא֙ וַֽחֲוִילָ֔ה
And the sons of Cush:
Seva, and Havilah;
וְסַבְתָּ֥ה וְרַעְמָ֖ה וְסַבְתְּכָ֑א
And Savtah and Ra’amah, and Savtecha;
וּבְנֵ֥י רַעְמָ֖ה שְׁבָ֥א וּדְדָֽן׃
And the sons of Ra’amah:
Sheva (Sheba in Southern Arabia) and Dedan (Medina).
10:8-9
וְכ֖וּשׁ יָלַ֣ד אֶת־נִמְרֹ֑ד
And Cush had begotten Nimrod
(rebelling willfully):
ה֣וּא הֵחֵ֔ל לִֽהְיֹ֥ות גִּבֹּ֖ר בָּאָֽרֶץ׃
He became profane,
becoming mighty on the earth;
הֽוּא־הָיָ֥ה גִבֹּֽר־צַ֖יִד לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה
Even he became a mighty hunter-provisioner,
to the face the LORD;
עַל־כֵּן֙ יֵֽאָמַ֔ר
Therefore it would be said:
כְּנִמְרֹ֛ד גִּבֹּ֥ור צַ֖יִד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
“Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter-provisioner,
to the face of the LORD”
10:10
וַתְּהִ֨י רֵאשִׁ֤ית מַמְלַכְתֹּו֙ בָּבֶ֔ל
And the starting point of his kingdom
was Bavel (Babylon),
וְאֶ֖רֶךְ וְאַכַּ֣ד וְכַלְנֵ֑ה
then Erech, and then Akkad and Calneh;
בְּאֶ֖רֶץ שִׁנְעָֽר׃
In the land of Shinar (Mesopotamia).
10:11-12
מִן־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַהִ֖וא יָצָ֣א אַשּׁ֑וּר
From that same land Asshur had departed;
וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ אֶת־נִ֣ינְוֵ֔ה
And he built Nineveh,
וְאֶת־רְחֹבֹ֥ת עִ֖יר וְאֶת־כָּֽלַח׃
and the open plazas of the city, and also Kelah;
וְֽאֶת־רֶ֔סֶן בֵּ֥ין נִֽינְוֵ֖ה וּבֵ֣ין כָּ֑לַח
And Resen, between Nineveh and Kelah;
הִ֖וא הָעִ֥יר הַגְּדֹלָֽה׃
It is the great city.
10:13-14
וּמִצְרַ֡יִם יָלַ֞ד אֶת־לוּדִ֧ים וְאֶת־עֲנָמִ֛ים
Now Mitzraim (Egypt),
he had begotten the Ludim (Lydia) and the Anamim,
וְאֶת־לְהָבִ֖ים וְאֶת־נַפְתֻּחִֽים׃
and the Lehavites, and the Naphtuhim (Lower Egypt)
וְֽאֶת־פַּתְרֻסִ֞ים
And the Patrusim (Upper Egypt),
וְאֶת־כַּסְלֻחִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָצְא֥וּ מִשָּׁ֛ם
and also the Kasluhim, whence had departed
פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וְאֶת־כַּפְתֹּרִֽים׃ ס
Pilishtim (Philistines) and the Caphtorim (Pelusium and Minoan Crete).
