Genesis 41:1
Now it took place,
at the end of two whole years,
That Pharaoh was in process of dreaming,
And behold, he is standing by the Nile;
Genesis 41:2
And lo and behold out of the Nile,
seven cows were ascending,
Excellent in appearance, and fat of flesh,
Then they grazed among the reeds;
Genesis 41:3
Then behold, seven other cows, —
They were ascending behind them out of the Nile,
Bad in appearance and thin of flesh;
And they stood beside the cows on the Nile’s edge;
Genesis 41:4
And they devoured the cows: —
The ones bad in appearance and thin of flesh,
They devoured the seven cows,
The ones excellent in appearance, and fat;
Then Pharaoh awoke.
Genesis 41:5
And then he slept and dreamt
a second time:
And behold, seven ears of grain,
Were springing up on one stalk, —
filled-out and good;
Genesis 41:6
And then behold! Seven ears of grain,
Thin, and having been scorched by the east wind,
They were sprouting up behind them;
Genesis 41:7
And the thin ears of grain, they engulfed
The seven fat and full ears of grain;
Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold it was a dream.
Genesis 41:8
And it happened in the morning
that his spirit was troubled,
So he sent word and summoned
all the sacred scribes of Egypt,
And all the learned of it;
Then Pharaoh recounted his dream to them;
But there were none who interpreted them for Pharaoh.
Genesis 41:9
Then the overseer of the cup-bearers
spoke with Pharaoh, saying:
“I am remembering my sins today;”
Genesis 41:10
“Pharaoh had been furious against his servants;
And he placed me in custody,
In the house of the overseer of the executioner-guards,
I, together with the overseer of the bakers;”
Genesis 41:11
“And we dreamt a dream, on the same night,
I and he,
Each according to the interpretation of his own dream,
we had dreamt.”
Genesis 41:12
A servant to the overseer of the executioner-guards,
And we recounted them to him,
And he interpreted our dreams for us;
Each according to his own dream,
He had interpreted;”
Genesis 41:13
“And it took place, — just as he had interpreted for us,
just so it happened…
I he restored to my position,
and him he hanged.”
Genesis 41:14
Then Pharaoh sent word and summoned Joseph,
And they quickly brought him out from the dungeon;
Then he shaved and changed his clothes;
And he came to Pharaoh.
Genesis 41:15
And Pharaoh said to Joseph:
“I dreamt a dream,
and there was no one who interpreted it.
Now I have heard concerning you saying,
That you can listen to and understand a dream,
to interpret it;”
Genesis 41:16
And Joseph replied to Pharaoh saying,
“It is not up to me…
God will answer Pharaoh with completeness!”
Genesis 41:17
And Pharaoh spoke to Joseph:
“In my dream,
here I am standing on the bank of the Nile;”
Genesis 41:18
“And Behold! Out of the Nile seven cows are ascending,—
Fat of flesh and fair of form;
And they grazed among the reeds;”
Genesis 41:19
“Then behold!
Seven other cows were ascending behind them,
Impoverished and of exceedingly bad form
and thin of flesh;
I have never seen the like of them
In all the land of Egypt for badness;”
Genesis 41:20
“Then they devoured the cows…
The thin and the bad,
They consumed the first seven cows, the fat ones.”
Genesis 41:21
“And they entered their belly,
But it was not known
that they had entered their inner body,
Since their appearance was bad,
just as before.
Then I awoke!”
Genesis 41:22
“Then I saw in my dream,
And behold! seven ears of grain,
Springing up on one stalk,
full and good;”
Genesis 41:23
“And then lo and behold seven ears of grain,
having been hardened thin,
being scorched by the east wind;
They were sprouting up behind them;”
Genesis 41:24
“And they swallowed up …
the thin ears of grain,
They swallowed up the seven good ears of grain!
Then I summoned the sacred scribes,
But there was no one who provided me an explanation.”
Genesis 41:25
Then Joseph said to Pharaoh:
“The dream of Pharaoh, it is one;
What God is about to do,
He has made known to Pharaoh;”
Genesis 41:26
“The seven good cows, —
Seven years they are,
Also the seven good heads of grain, —
Seven years they are;
The dream, it is one;”
Genesis 41:27
“Now the seven cows,
The thin and the bad ones,
who came up after them, —
Seven years they are,
And the seven heads of grain,
the thin ones, —
Dried out by the east wind:
They will be seven years of famine.”
Genesis 41:28
“This same word,
That I have spoken to Pharaoh …
What God is about to do,
He has shown Pharaoh:”
Genesis 41:29
“Behold! Seven years are about to come:
Great abundance, throughout all the land of Egypt;”
Genesis 41:30
“Then seven years of famine shall arise after them,
And all the abundance shall be forgotten
in the land of Egypt;
And the famine will waste the land;”
Genesis 41:31
“And the abundance
will become unknown in the land,
Afterwards, from the presence of that famine;
On account of the extreme severity of it;”
Genesis 41:32
“Now regarding the dream
being repeated twice to Pharaoh:
Indeed the word is sure
from beside The True God,
And That True God is coming quickly,
in order to carry it out.”
Genesis 41:33
“And now, let Pharaoh look for
someone who is discerning and skilful,
And set him over the land of Egypt;”
Genesis 41:34
“Let Pharaoh act,
and let him appoint administrators over the land;
Then let him take 20% of the land of Egypt,
Within the seven years of plenty;”
Genesis 41:35
“And let them gather all the food-harvest
of the good years,
these that are about to come:
And let them heap up threshed grain, —
Under Pharaoh’s authority,
so let them save the food within the districts;”
Genesis 41:36
“And that food shall become a reserve for the land,
For the seven years of the famine,
That which shall exist in the land of Egypt; —
And so the land shall not be cut off during that famine;”
Genesis 41:37
Now that word was good in the eyes of Pharaoh;
Also in the eyes of all his servants;
Genesis 41:38
And Pharaoh said to his servants:
“Can a man such as this be found,
Where the Spirit of God is in him!?”
Genesis 41:39
Then Pharaoh said to Joseph:
“Considering God having shown you all this,
There is none discerning and skilful like you;”
Genesis 41:40
“You yourself shall be over my house,
and regarding the declaration of your mouth, —
it must touch-and-equip my entire nation:
Only in respect of the throne,
Shall I be greater than you;”
Genesis 41:41
And then Pharaoh said to Joseph,
“See, I have set you over
The entire land of Egypt;”
Genesis 41:42
Then Pharaoh removed his signet ring
from on his hand,
And he put it on the hand of Joseph;
And he clothed him in pure-white-Egyptian linen,
And he positioned a chain of gold over his neck;
Genesis 41:43
And he caused him to ride
In his second chariot,
And they called out before him, “Bow”;
So then placing him over the entire land of Egypt.
Genesis 41:44
And Pharaoh said to Joseph:
“I am Pharaoh;
but without you,
No one shall lift their hand or their foot,
In the entire land of Egypt!”
Genesis 41:45
And Pharaoh named Joseph:
Zaphenath-paneah (‘God speaks, and he lives!’),
And he gave him Asenath
(‘belonging to the goddess Neith – goddess of wisdom’), —
The daughter of Poti Phera (‘given of Ra’ – the sun god),
The priest of On (Heliopolis – ‘City of the Sun’) for wife.
And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
Genesis 41:46
Now Joseph was a son of thirty years,
When he stood
in the presence of Pharaoh the king of Egypt;
And Joseph went out from before Pharaoh,
And he moved through the entire land of Egypt;
Genesis 41:47
And the land produced,
in the seven years of plenty,
By fistfuls;
Genesis 41:48
And so he gathered all the food-harvest,
of the seven years,
That occurred in the land of Egypt,
And he placed the food in the cities;
The food of the city field that was around it,
He had put in the midst of it/the city.
Genesis 41:49
And Joseph collected threshed grain,
like the sand of the sea, being so vast;
Until he had left off counting,
for it was uncountable.
Genesis 41:50
Now to Joseph were borne two sons,
Before the famine years would begin;
They whom Asenath had borne to him, —
The daughter of Poti PheRa,
The priest of On;
Genesis 41:51
And Joseph named the firstborn
Manasseh (“Causing to Forget”):
“For indeed God has made me forget
all my trouble,
And the whole of my father’s household;”
Genesis 41:52
Now the name of the second,
he had called Ephraim (Doubly Fruitful);
“For indeed God has made me fruitful,
in the land of my affliction!”
Genesis 41:53
Now they came to an end, —
the seven years of plenty;
That had occurred in the land of Egypt;
Genesis 41:54
And the seven years of famine
were unleashed for fulfilment,
Just as Joseph had said;
And there was famine in all lands,
But in the land of Egypt, there was bread;
Genesis 41:55
And the entire land of Egypt was famished,
Then the people cried out to Pharaoh for bread;
But Pharaoh gave orders to all of Egypt:
“Go to Joseph!
Whatever he shall say to you, you must do!”
Genesis 41:56
Now the famine was upon
the whole face of the land:
And Joseph made available
all that was in it,
And he sold grain to the Egyptians,
But the famine was severe in the land of Egypt;
Genesis 41:57
And every country came to Egypt,
To Joseph, in order to buy grain;
Because that famine was severe in every land.
