Genesis 19:1
וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ שְׁנֵ֨י הַמַּלְאָכִ֤ים סְדֹ֙מָה֙ בָּעֶ֔רֶב
Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening,
וְל֖וֹט יֹשֵׁ֣ב בְּשַֽׁעַר־סְדֹ֑ם
When Lot was seated in Sodom’s gateway;
וַיַּרְא־לוֹט֙ וַיָּ֣קָם לִקְרָאתָ֔ם
And Lot took note and rose to meet them,
וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ אַפַּ֖יִם אָֽרְצָה׃
And he bowed himself, face earthwards;
Genesis 19:2
וַיֹּ֜אמֶר הִנֶּ֣ה נָּא־אֲדֹנַ֗י
And he said, “Behold now my Lords,
ס֣וּרוּ נָ֠א אֶל־בֵּ֨ית עַבְדְּכֶ֤ם וְלִ֙ינוּ֙
Please turn aside
to the house of your servant and pass the night,
וְרַחֲצ֣וּ רַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם
and wash your feet,
וְהִשְׁכַּמְתֶּ֖ם וַהֲלַכְתֶּ֣ם לְדַרְכְּכֶ֑ם
Then make an early start and go on your way.”
וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֹּ֔א כִּ֥י בָרְח֖וֹב נָלִֽין׃
And they said
“No, but in the open plaza we shall spend the night.”
Genesis 19:3
וַיִּפְצַר־בָּ֣ם מְאֹ֔ד וַיָּסֻ֣רוּ אֵלָ֔יו
Nevertheless he urged them greatly,
and they turned aside to him
וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ
and they went to his house;
וַיַּ֤עַשׂ לָהֶם֙ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה וּמַצּ֥וֹת אָפָ֖ה וַיֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃
And he prepared a feast for them;
And he baked matsa (unleavened barley flatbread),
and they ate.
Genesis 19:4
טֶרֶם֮ יִשְׁכָּבוּ֒
They had not yet laid down,
וְאַנְשֵׁ֨י הָעִ֜יר אַנְשֵׁ֤י סְדֹם֙ נָסַ֣בּוּ עַל־הַבַּ֔יִת
And the men of the city, the men of Sodom,
had surrounded the house,
מִנַּ֖עַר וְעַד־זָקֵ֑ן
from adolescent even to elder;
כָּל־הָעָ֖ם מִקָּצֶֽה׃
all of the nation, in its fullness;
Genesis 19:5
וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ אֶל־לוֹט֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ ל֔וֹ
And they called out to Lot, and said to him:
אַיֵּ֧ה הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥אוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ הַלָּ֑יְלָה
“Where are the men, those who came to you tonight?
הוֹצִיאֵ֣ם אֵלֵ֔ינוּ וְנֵדְעָ֖ה אֹתָֽם׃
Bring them out to us, so we can sexually experience them!”
Genesis 19:6-7
וַיֵּצֵ֧א אֲלֵהֶ֛ם ל֖וֹט הַפֶּ֑תְחָה
And Lot went outside the door to them;
וְהַדֶּ֖לֶת סָגַ֥ר אַחֲרָֽיו׃
And he closed the door after him;
וַיֹּאמַ֑ר
And he said:
אַל־נָ֥א אַחַ֖י תָּרֵֽעוּ׃
“Please fellow citizens you must not be evil!”
Genesis 19:8
הִנֵּה־נָ֨א לִ֜י שְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֗וֹת
“Behold now I have two daughters,
אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יָדְעוּ֙ אִ֔ישׁ
who have not sexually experienced a man,
אוֹצִֽיאָה־נָּ֤א אֶתְהֶן֙ אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם
Let me please bring them out to you,
וַעֲשׂ֣וּ לָהֶ֔ן כַּטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינֵיכֶ֑ם
Then do with them, as is good in your eyes,
רַ֠ק לָֽאֲנָשִׁ֤ים הָאֵל֙ אַל־תַּעֲשׂ֣וּ דָבָ֔ר
Only to these men, you must not do a thing,
כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן בָּ֖אוּ בְּצֵ֥ל קֹרָתִֽי׃
For therefore they came
within the shadow (protection) of my rafter (house).”
Genesis 19:9
וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ ׀ גֶּשׁ־הָ֗לְאָה
But they said:
“Move aside!”
וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ הָאֶחָ֤ד בָּֽא־לָגוּר֙ וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֣ט שָׁפ֔וֹט
And they said:
“This one came to sojourn,
but he passes judgement continually;
עַתָּ֕ה נָרַ֥ע לְךָ֖ מֵהֶ֑ם
Now, we shall deal worse with you than them!”
וַיִּפְצְר֨וּ בָאִ֤ישׁ בְּלוֹט֙ מְאֹ֔ד
And they pressed the man Lot vehemently,
וַֽיִּגְּשׁ֖וּ לִשְׁבֹּ֥ר הַדָּֽלֶת׃
Then they lunged forward to break down the door.
Genesis 19:10
וַיִּשְׁלְח֤וּ הֽ͏ָאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת־יָדָ֔ם
But the men (angels) stretched forth their power,
וַיָּבִ֧יאוּ אֶת־ל֛וֹט אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הַבָּ֑יְתָה
and they brought Lot to them, to the house;
וְאֶת־הַדֶּ֖לֶת סָגָֽרוּ׃
And also they shut the door;
Genesis 19:11
וְֽאֶת־הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים אֲשֶׁר־פֶּ֣תַח הַבַּ֗יִת
And the men who were at the entrance of the house,
הִכּוּ֙ בַּסַּנְוֵרִ֔ים מִקָּטֹ֖ן וְעַד־גָּד֑וֹל
they had struck with blindness, from youngest to eldest,
וַיִּלְא֖וּ לִמְצֹ֥א הַפָּֽתַח׃
So that they gave up trying to locate the doorway.
Genesis 19:12
וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים אֶל־ל֗וֹט עֹ֚ד מִֽי־לְךָ֣ פֹ֔ה
Then the men (angels) said to Lot:
“Who are yours here still,—
חָתָן֙ וּבָנֶ֣יךָ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־לְךָ֖ בָּעִ֑יר
son-in-law, and your sons and your daughters,
and any who are yours in the city,
הוֹצֵ֖א מִן־הַמָּקֽוֹם׃
Make them come out from the place!”
Genesis 19:13
כִּֽי־מַשְׁחִתִ֣ים אֲנַ֔חְנוּ אֶת־הַמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה
“Because we are about to destroy this place,
כִּֽי־גֽ͏ָדְלָ֤ה צַעֲקָתָם֙ אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה
For their outcry has become great before the LORD;
וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֥נוּ יְהוָ֖ה לְשַׁחֲתָֽהּ׃
Wherefore the LORD has sent us to destroy it.”
Genesis 19:14
וַיֵּצֵ֨א ל֜וֹט וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר ׀ אֶל־חֲתָנָ֣יו ׀ לֹקְחֵ֣י בְנֹתָ֗יו
So Lot went out and he spoke to his daughter’s husbands,
they who took his daughters,
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ ק֤וּמוּ צְּאוּ֙ מִן־הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה
And he said, “Get up, get out of this place,
כִּֽי־מַשְׁחִ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־הָעִ֑יר
because the LORD is about to destroy the city!”;
וַיְהִ֥י כִמְצַחֵ֖ק בְּעֵינֵ֥י חֲתָנָֽיו׃
But he was like a joker in the eyes of his daughter’s husbands.
Genesis 19:15
וּכְמוֹ֙ הַשַּׁ֣חַר עָלָ֔ה
Now when the first light of morning had risen,
וַיָּאִ֥יצוּ הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים בְּל֣וֹט לֵאמֹ֑ר
Then the angels placed urgency on Lot, saying,
קוּם֩ קַ֨ח אֶֽת־אִשְׁתְּךָ֜
“Get up take your wife,
וְאֶת־שְׁתֵּ֤י בְנֹתֶ֙יךָ֙ הַנִּמְצָאֹ֔ת
and your two daughters who are present,
פֶּן־תִּסָּפֶ֖ה בַּעֲוֺ֥ן הָעִֽיר׃
Lest you should be wiped out with the iniquity of the city!”
Genesis 19:16
וֽ͏ַיִּתְמַהְמָ֓הּ ׀ וַיַּחֲזִ֨קוּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֜ים
But he hesitated, so the men (angels) took hold of
בְּיָד֣וֹ וּבְיַד־אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וּבְיַד֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י בְנֹתָ֔יו
his hand and the hand of his wife,
and the hand of his two daughters, —
בְּחֶמְלַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה עָלָ֑יו
through the LORD having compassion on him;
וַיֹּצִאֻ֥הוּ וַיַּנִּחֻ֖הוּ מִח֥וּץ לָעִֽיר׃
And they brought him out and set him down
without the city;
Genesis 19:17
וַיְהִי֩ כְהוֹצִיאָ֨ם אֹתָ֜ם הַח֗וּצָה
And it took place, when they had brought them without
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הִמָּלֵ֣ט עַל־נַפְשֶׁ֔ךָ
Then said He: “Flee for your life!
אַל־תַּבִּ֣יט אַחֲרֶ֔יךָ
You must not look behind you,
וְאַֽל־תַּעֲמֹ֖ד בְּכָל־הַכִּכָּ֑ר
And you must not stop in all of the plain:
הָהָ֥רָה הִמָּלֵ֖ט פֶּן־תִּסָּפֶֽה׃
To the hill-country you must flee,
lest you are wiped out!”
Genesis 19:18
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹט אֲלֵהֶ֑ם
But Lot said to them:
אַל־נָ֖א אֲדֹנָֽי׃
“Please no, my Lord!”
Genesis 19:19
הִנֵּה־נָ֠א מָצָ֨א עַבְדְּךָ֣ חֵן֮ בְּעֵינֶיךָ֒
“Behold I pray Thee, your servant has found favour in your eyes;
וַתַּגְדֵּ֣ל חַסְדְּךָ֗ אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשִׂ֙יתָ֙ עִמָּדִ֔י
Moreover you made your mercy increase,
that which you did for me,
לְהַחֲי֖וֹת אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֑י
by allowing my soul to live;
וְאָנֹכִ֗י לֹ֤א אוּכַל֙ לְהִמָּלֵ֣ט הָהָ֔רָה
But I, I may not be able to flee to the hill-country,
פֶּן־תִּדְבָּקַ֥נִי הָרָעָ֖ה וָמַֽתִּי׃
peradventure the disaster should claim me, and I die;”
Genesis 19:20
הִנֵּה־נָ֠א הָעִ֨יר הַזֹּ֧את קְרֹבָ֛ה
“Behold now this city nearby
לָנ֥וּס שָׁ֖מָּה וְהִ֣יא מִצְעָ֑ר
to escape there, since it is little;
אִמָּלְטָ֨ה נָּ֜א שָׁ֗מָּה
Please let me flee there,
הֲלֹ֥א מִצְעָ֛ר הִ֖וא וּתְחִ֥י נַפְשִֽׁי׃
(is it not little), and my soul may live?”
Genesis 19:21
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו הִנֵּה֙ נָשָׂ֣אתִי פָנֶ֔יךָ
And He said to him:
“Behold, I granted favour ahead of you,
גַּ֖ם לַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה
Even concerning this thing,
לְבִלְתִּ֛י הָפְכִּ֥י אֶת־הָעִ֖יר אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ׃
In order not to overthrow the city of which you spoke;”
Genesis 19:22
מַהֵר֙ הִמָּלֵ֣ט שָׁ֔מָּה
“Be quick, flee there,
כִּ֣י לֹ֤א אוּכַל֙ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת דָּבָ֔ר
Because I cannot endure to do a thing,
עַד־בֹּאֲךָ֖ שָׁ֑מָּה
until your entering there.”
עַל־כֵּ֛ן קָרָ֥א שֵׁם־הָעִ֖יר צֽוֹעַר׃
That is why he called the name of the city “Zoar”(small, lowly).
Genesis 19:23-24
הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ יָצָ֣א עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
Now the sun had gone out over the land,
וְל֖וֹט בָּ֥א צֹֽעֲרָה׃
And Lot had entered Zoar;
וֽ͏ַיהוָ֗ה הִמְטִ֧יר עַל־סְדֹ֛ם וְעַל־עֲמֹרָ֖ה גָּפְרִ֣ית וָאֵ֑שׁ
Then the LORD caused it to rain fire and sulphur
upon Sodom and Gomorrah: —
מֵאֵ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה מִן־הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
From the LORD, from Heaven.
Genesis 19:25-26
וֽ͏ַיַּהֲפֹךְ֙ אֶת־הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔ל וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־הַכִּכָּ֑ר
And He overthrew those cities, and the whole plain;
וְאֵת֙ כָּל־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הֶעָרִ֔ים וְצֶ֖מַח הָאֲדָמָֽה׃
And all the inhabitants of the cities,
and the vegetation of the ground.
וַתַּבֵּ֥ט אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מֵאַחֲרָ֑יו
But Lot’s wife looked, from behind him,
וַתְּהִ֖י נְצִ֥יב מֶֽלַח׃
And she became a pillar of salt.
Genesis 9:27
וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֥ם אַבְרָהָ֖ם בַּבֹּ֑קֶר
Now Avraham went early in the morning,
אֶל־הַ֨מָּק֔וֹם
To the place,
אֲשֶׁר־עָ֥מַד שָׁ֖ם אֶת־פְּנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃
where he had stood there in the presence of the LORD;
Genesis 19:28
וַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ף עַל־פְּנֵ֤י סְדֹם֙ וַעֲמֹרָ֔ה
And he looked down upon the face of Sodom and Gomorrah,
וְעַֽל־כָּל־פְּנֵ֖י אֶ֣רֶץ הַכִּכָּ֑ר
and over the whole face of the land of the plain;
וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה עָלָה֙ קִיטֹ֣ר הָאָ֔רֶץ
And he observed, and behold,
the smoke of the land had ascended,
כְּקִיטֹ֖ר הַכִּבְשָֽׁן׃
like thick furnace smoke;
Genesis 19:29
וַיְהִ֗י בְּשַׁחֵ֤ת אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־עָרֵ֣י הַכִּכָּ֔ר
And so it was,
When God annihilated the cities of the plain,
וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֑ם
Then God remembered Avraham,
וַיְשַׁלַּ֤ח אֶת־לוֹט֙ מִתּ֣וֹךְ הַהֲפֵכָ֔ה
And He let Lot escape from the midst of the overthrow,
בַּהֲפֹךְ֙ אֶת־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים
When He overthrew those cities
אֲשֶׁר־יָשַׁ֥ב בָּהֵ֖ן לֽוֹט׃
among which Lot had settled;
Genesis 19:30
וַיַּעַל֩ ל֨וֹט מִצּ֜וֹעַר וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב בָּהָ֗ר
Now Lot went up from Zoar and he dwelt in the hill-country,
וּשְׁתֵּ֤י בְנֹתָיו֙ עִמּ֔וֹ כִּ֥י יָרֵ֖א לָשֶׁ֣בֶת בְּצ֑וֹעַר
and his two daughters with him,
because he had become afraid to dwell in Zoar;
וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה ה֖וּא וּשְׁתֵּ֥י בְנֹתָֽיו׃
And he settled in cave country,
himself and his two daughters.
Genesis 19:31
וַתֹּאמֶר֧ הַבְּכִירָ֛ה אֶל־הַצְּעִירָ֖ה אָבִ֣ינוּ זָקֵ֑ן
Now the firstborn daughter said to the younger:
“Our father has grown old,
וְאִ֨ישׁ אֵ֤ין בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ לָב֣וֹא עָלֵ֔ינוּ
and there isn’t a man in the land to come in upon us,
כְּדֶ֖רֶךְ כָּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
according to the manner of the whole earth;”
Genesis 19:32
לְכָ֨ה נַשְׁקֶ֧ה אֶת־אָבִ֛ינוּ יַ֖יִן
“Come on let us make our father drink wine,
וְנִשְׁכְּבָ֣ה עִמּ֑וֹ
and let us lie with him,
וּנְחַיֶּ֥ה מֵאָבִ֖ינוּ זָֽרַע׃
So that we may bring to life
offspring from our father.”
Genesis 19:33
וַתַּשְׁקֶ֧יןָ אֶת־אֲבִיהֶ֛ן יַ֖יִן בַּלַּ֣יְלָה ה֑וּא
And they made their father drink wine
on the same night;
וַתָּבֹ֤א הַבְּכִירָה֙ וַתִּשְׁכַּ֣ב אֶת־אָבִ֔יהָ
Then the firstborn came
and laid with her father,
וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֥ע בְּשִׁכְבָ֖הּ וּבְקוּׄמָֽהּ׃
And he was not aware when she lay down,
and when she arose (but not totally unaware);
Genesis 19:34
וֽ͏ַיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת
And it took place on the morrow,
וַתֹּ֤אמֶר הַבְּכִירָה֙ אֶל־הַצְּעִירָ֔ה
that the firstborn said to the younger,
הֵן־שָׁכַ֥בְתִּי אֶ֖מֶשׁ אֶת־אָבִ֑י
“Look!- yesterday I laid with my father:
נַשְׁקֶ֨נּוּ יַ֜יִן גַּם־הַלַּ֗יְלָה
Let’s make him drink wine tonight also,
וּבֹ֙אִי֙ שִׁכְבִ֣י עִמּ֔וֹ
then you go lay with him,
וּנְחַיֶּ֥ה מֵאָבִ֖ינוּ זָֽרַע׃
that we can bring to life offspring from our father;”
Genesis 19:35
וַתַּשְׁקֶ֜יןָ גַּ֣ם בַּלַּ֧יְלָה הַה֛וּא אֶת־אֲבִיהֶ֖ן יָ֑יִן
And they made their father drink wine on that night as well;
וַתָּ֤קָם הַצְּעִירָה֙ וַתִּשְׁכַּ֣ב עִמּ֔וֹ
Then the younger made a move,
and she laid with him;
וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֥ע בְּשִׁכְבָ֖הּ וּבְקֻמָֽהּ׃
And he was not aware when she laid down and when she arose.
Genesis 19:36-37
וַתַּהֲרֶ֛יןָ שְׁתֵּ֥י בְנֽוֹת־ל֖וֹט מֵאֲבִיהֶֽן׃
And so the two daughters of Lot
became pregnant by their father.
וַתֵּ֤לֶד הַבְּכִירָה֙ בֵּ֔ן
And the firstborn gave birth to a son,
וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ מוֹאָ֑ב
and she called his name Moav (father’s gene water);
ה֥וּא אֲבִֽי־מוֹאָ֖ב עַד־הַיּֽוֹם׃
He was the forefather of present-day Moab;
Genesis 19:38
וְהַצְּעִירָ֤ה גַם־הִוא֙ יָ֣לְדָה בֵּ֔ן
Now the younger one, she too had borne a son,
וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בֶּן־עַמִּ֑י
and she called his name
Ben-Ammi (son of my paternal kin),
ה֛וּא אֲבִ֥י בְנֵֽי־עַמּ֖וֹן עַד־הַיּֽוֹם׃ ס
He was the forefather
of the present-day sons of Ammon (paternal kin nation).
