Genesis 24

24:1

Now Abraham had grown old,
he had advanced in days;

And Yehovah (the LORD) had blessed Abraham in everything;

24:2-3

And Abraham said to his servant,
the elder of his household

who had stewardship on all that he had:

“Please place your hand under my covenantal loin

So that I can make you pledge by the LORD,
The God of Heaven and the God of the Earth —

That you shall not take a wife for my son
from the daughters of the Canaanite,

among whom I am dwelling;”

24:4

“But you must go to my country,
and to my kindred,

and you shall fetch a wife for my son, for Isaac.”

24:5

And the servant said to him:
“Supposing that the woman will not go

to follow me to this land?

Should I lead your son

to the country from where you had gone out?!”

24:6

Then Abraham answered him:

“Guard yourself, lest you lead my son there”:

24:7

“The LORD, the God of Heaven,

Who took me from the house of my father
and from the country of my kindred,

And Who spoke to me, and Who pledged Himself to me,

By saying: ‘To your Seed I will give this land’;

The Same One, He will send His Messenger before you,

And so you shall fetch a wife for my son from there”.

24:8

“But if that woman is not willing to proceed after you,

Then you are freed from this pledge of mine;

Only you must not lead away my son there.”

24:9

So the servant placed his hand

under the covenantal loin of Abraham his master

And he pledged himself to him,
with regard to this matter.

24:10

And the servant fetched ten camels
out of his master’s camel herd and he went,

together with every sort of good thing of his master in his hand;

Now he arose and headed for Aram of Mesopotamia,
to the city of Nahor.

24:11

…………
And he made the camels kneel outside the city
by the water well,

At evening time,
when the women who draw water are coming out.

24:12

And he said within his heart:—
“O LORD, God of my master Abraham,

I pray thee make it happen today;

And carry out a kindness,
with benefit to my master Abraham”:

24:13

“Behold, I am standing at the water spring;

And the daughters of the men of the city
are going out to draw water”:

24:14

“And let it happen that  the young woman,
whom I will say to, ‘Please hold out your pitcher that I may drink’

that she shall say ‘Drink, and I shall also water your camels’;—

—her you have appointed for your servant, for Isaac,—

and in this I will know that you have carried out a kindness,
with benefit to my master!”

24:15

And it happened,
before he had finished speaking,

Behold there is Rebecca having come out,

(She who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah,

the daughter of Nahor, the brother of Abraham),

together with her pitcher upon her shoulder.

24:16

Now that young woman was extremely good of appearance,

A marriageable woman,
and no-one had known her;

and she went down to the spring and filled her pitcher,
and made her way up.

24:17

Then the servant went quickly to meet her,

and he said:
“Please let me sip a little water from your pitcher.”

24:18

And she replied: “Drink my lord”;

And she acted quickly,
and let down her pitcher
to her hand and provided him drink;

24:19

And she completed giving him drink,

Then she said:
“I shall also draw water for your camels,

until they have finished drinking.”

24:20

And she acted promptly
and emptied her pitcher into the trough,

Then she ran continually to the well to draw,

And she drew for all his camels;

24:21

And the man kept watching her closely,

keeping silent in order to know

Whether the LORD had made his journey successful or not;

24:22

Now it happened, when the camels had finished drinking,

that the man fetched a gold nose-ring,
it’s weight half a shekel (c.6gm) of gold;

And two bracelets for her wrists,

their weight 10 shekels (c. 114gm) of gold;

24:23

Then he said, “Please tell me, whose daughter are you?

Is there room for us to spend the night in your father’s house?”

24:24

And she said to him:
“I am the daughter of Bethuel,

Milcah’s son, whom she bore to Nahor.”

24:25

Furthermore she said to him:
“Both straw and fodder is plentiful by us,

As well as room to spend the night.”

24:26

Then the man bowed down,
and he prostrated himself in reverence to  the LORD;

24:27

And he said, “Blessed is the LORD,
the God of my master Abraham,

Who did not leave off His faithfulness and His truth
from being by my master;

As for me, the LORD has guided me into the path
of the house of my master’s blood-kinsmen.”

24:28

Then the young woman ran and made known
to her mother’s household,

The like of these things.

28:29

Now Rebecca had a brother,
whose name was Laban (white);

And Laban ran to the man without, to the spring;

24:30

And this happened, after seeing the gold ring,
and the bracelets on the hands of his sister,

And as soon as he heard the words of Rebecca his sister, saying,

“The man had spoken thus to me”;

Then he went to the man,

And behold, he was standing by the camels, beside the spring.

24:31

And he said: “Come, blessed of the LORD!

For why should you stand on the outside,
considering that I have prepared the house,

and also a place for the camels?!”

24:32

And the man went to the house:

And he (Laban) untied the camels;

and he gave hay and fodder to the camels,

and water to wash his feet,

and the feet of the men who were with him;

24:33

Also food was set before him to eat,

But he said “I cannot eat until I have stated my business.”

Then he said, “speak!”

24:34

And he responded:

“The servant of Abraham I am.

24:35

“Now the LORD has blessed my master exceedingly,
and he became great;

And He gave him

flocks and herds,

And silver and gold,

Both menservants and maidservants,

And camels, and donkeys.”

24:36

“Moreover, Sarah my master’s wife
bore a son to my master,
after her old age;

And he gave him everything that he has.”

24:37

“Now my master made me pledge, saying:

‘You must not fetch a wife for my son
from among the daughters of the Canaanite,

In whose land I am dwelling;’”

24:38

“’But instead you must go to the house of my father
and to my clan,

And fetch a wife for my son.’”

24:39

“Then I said to my master:

‘Supposing that the women does not want to proceed after me?’”

24:40

“And he said to me:

‘The LORD, before Whom I have walked,

He shall send his Angel with you
and He will make your journey successful,

And you shall fetch a wife for my son,
from my extended family and from the house of my father.’”

24:41

“’But you will be released from my oath,
when you shall go to my extended family,

And if they should not grant you,
then you will be free from my curse.’”

24:42

“Now today I came to the spring;

And I said: ‘O  LORD, God of my master Abraham,

Please, if you are prospering my mission,

That upon which I am going;—’”

24:43

“’—Behold I am standing at the water spring;

And may it happen that the marriageable girl coming out to draw,

that I shall say to,

‘Please let me drink a little water from your pitcher, —’’”

24:44

“’—and she says to me, ‘You yourself drink,
and also for your camels I will draw’;

She is the woman, whom the LORD has appointed
for my master’s son.’”

24:45

”Before I could finish speaking in my heart,

Then behold Rebecca was already coming out
with her pitcher upon her shoulder

and she went down to the spring and drew:

and I said to her,—’Please give me a drink’”.

24:46

“Then she acted quickly,
and let down her pitcher from upon her,

And she said,
‘Drink, and I shall also water your camels.’

So I drank, then she had also watered the camels.”

24:47

“And then I asked her and said,
‘Whose daughter are you?’

“And she said:

‘The daughter of Bethuel the son of Nahor,
whom Milcah had borne to him.’

And I placed the ring on her nose,
and the bracelets on her wrists.”

24:48

“Then I bowed down and prostrated myself,
in reverence to the LORD;

And I blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham,

Who had led me in the way of truth,

To fetch the granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son!”

24:49

“And now,

If ye be about to carry out faithfulness and solidarity
with my master, tell me:

Or if not, tell me,

So that I may turn to the right or the left.”

24:50

Then Laban and Bethuel responded, and they said:
“This matter has come from the LORD;

We cannot be speaking towards you bad or good;”

24:51

“Here is Rebecca before you,
take her and go;

That she shall become wife to the son of your
master,

Since the LORD has spoken.”

24:52

And it happened,

when the servant of Abraham had heard their words,

that he bowed himself towards the earth,
in reverence to the LORD.

24:53

Then the servant brought forth
and gave to Rebecca
articles of silver and articles of gold, and raiment;

Likewise he had given precious gifts
to her brother and to her mother.

24:54

And they ate and they drank,
he and the men who were with him,
and they spent the night;

Then they arose in the morning,
and he said, “Send me off to my master.”

24:55

But her brother said, — and her mother:

“Let the girl remain with us a few days, or ten;

Afterward, she can go.”

24:56

But he said to them

“Do not delay me,

Since the LORD has prospered my journey:

Send me away, that I may go to my master.”

24:57

Then they said:
“We shall call the girl,

And solicit her own declaration.”

24:58

Then they called Rebecca, and they said to her:

“Will you proceed with this man?”

And she said “I will go.”

24:59

So they sent off Rebecca their sister, together with with her nurse;

And the servant of Abraham,
together with his men;

24:60

And they blessed Rebecca and they said to her:

“Our beloved:

You shall become thousands of ten thousands;

Then your Seed will possess the gate of His enemies.”

24:61

And Rebecca arose together with her servant girls,
and they mounted the camels,

and they followed the man;

Thus the servant took Rebecca and proceeded.

24:62

……………….Now Isaac had come back from going to
Be’er Lachai Roi
(The Well of the Living One Who Sees);

And he was dwelling in the land of the Negev.

24:63

And Isaac came out to stroll meditatively in the field
at the turn of evening;

And he lifted his eyes and looked:
and behold camels were approaching!

24:64

And Rebecca lifted her eyes,
and she saw Isaac;

Then she fell from the camel!

24:65

And she said to the servant:

“Who is the man, this one here,
walking in the field to meet us?”

And the servant said: “He is my master.”

Then she took the veil,
and covered herself.

24:66

And the servant recounted to Isaac

All the things that he had done.

24:67

So Isaac brought her to the tent of Sarah his mother,

Then he took Rebecca and she became his wife,
and he loved her;

And so he found consolation, after his mother.

The traditional translation, “The LORD”, for
the Tetragrammaton, יְהוָ֣ה, at the beginning of chapter 24 in this translation is also rendered as the proper name, Yehovah. The name is translated by others as “Yahweh” and in Jewish circles as HaShem (“The Name”).
Moses wrote the account from his perspective in time. Previously the Divine Name, Yehovah, had not been revealed. —
Exodus 6:3 KJV “And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.”

Is יְהוָ֣ה also an acronym?
