Genesis 25:19-34

25:19

Now here is the birthings history of Isaac,
the son of Abraham:

Abraham had begotten Isaac;

25:20

And Isaac was a son of forty years,

When he took Rebecca,
the daughter of Bethuel the Aramaean,
from Paddan-Aram (Upper-Mesopotamian flatland),

the sister of Laban the Aramaean, to himself for wife.

25:21

Now Isaac pleaded to the LORD
—directly in front of his wife,
for she was infertile;

And the LORD let Himself be entreated,
so Rebecca his wife conceived.

25:22

And the sons within her
kicked and shoved one another;

And she said “Even though it is so,
for what reason is this state I am in?”

And she went to ask the LORD.

25:23

And the LORD said to her:
“Two nations are in your belly,

and two peoples shall separate themselves from your inward parts;

And one people will be stronger than the other,
but the elder, he shall serve the younger.”

25:24

And her days were fulfilled for giving birth;

And behold there were twins in her womb!

25:25

Then the first came out, reddish,
all of him, the like of a hairy robe;

And she called his name Esau;

25:26

Then afterwards his brother had come out,

Together with his hand having taken hold on the heel of Esau;

And he called his name Jacob (Ja’akov – he will take by the heel);

And Isaac was a son of sixty years, when birthing them.

25:27

Now the boys grew up,

And Esau became a man skilful in hunting,

But Jacob a plain man,
one who inhabits tents;

25:28

And Isaac loved Esau,
Because game was congenial to his taste,

But Rebecca was the one who loved Jacob.

25:29

Now Jacob cooked up a stew;

Then Esau came in from the country,
and he was famished;

25:30

And Esau said to Jacob:

“Let me please gulp down
some of the reddish stuff,— this reddish stuff,
for I am famished.”

Therefore he had called his name “Edom” (Red).

25:31

But Jacob said

“Sell me your birth-right as of today!”

25:32

Then Esau said:

Look, I am going to die!

So what good is this birthright to me!

25:33

Furthermore Jacob said:

“Pledge yourself to me in completeness and finality
as of this day.”

Then he pledged himself to him;

So he sold his birthright to Jacob.

25:34

Then Jacob had given Esau bread and red lentil stew,

and he ate and he drank, then he got up and he departed;

And so Esau despised the birth-right.
