Genesis 27

27:1

And so it was that Isaac had become old,

And his eyes became dull of seeing;

And he called Esau, his eldest son,

And he said to him, “My son”,
and he answered him, “Here I am!”

27:2

And Isaac said,
“Behold now, I have become old, —

I know not the day of my death;”

27:3

“Now then, take up your implements,
your quiver and your bow;

And go to the countryside,
and hunt out for me some game;”

27:4

And make me a tasty dish,
Just as I love,

Then bring it to me and I shall eat;

So that in transition my soul can bless you,
before I die;

27:5

But Rebecca was listening,

When Isaac was speaking to Esau his son.

Then Esau walked the countryside,
to hunt game to bring in.

27:6

Now Rebecca said

to Jacob her son:

“Behold, I heard your father,

Speaking to Esau your brother, saying:

27:7

“Bring me some game,

and make me a tasty dish that I may eat;

Then I shall bless you in the presence of the LORD,

before my death.”

27:8

And now my son, heed my voice!

To that which I am about to instruct you:

27:9

Go now to the flock,

And fetch for me from there
two goat kids, good ones;

And I shall make the delicious dish for your father,
just as he loves:

27:10

Then you will bring it to your father,
and he will eat,—

Who will bless you in transition, before his death.

27:11

But Jacob said to Rebecca, his mother:

“Behold Esau is a hairy man,

And I am a smooth man;”

27:12

“May be my father will handle me;

Then I shall become in his eyes
like one who makes a mockery;

And I will bring upon myself a curse,
rather than a blessing!”

27:13

But his mother said to him:
“Upon me be your curse, my son!

Howbeit, heed my voice,
and go fetch for me!”

27:14

So he went, and took, and brought, to his mother;

And his mother prepared a tasty dish,

Just as his father loved.

27:15

Then Rebecca took

the raiment of Esau, her eldest son,—

the precious raiment,
which was with her in the house;

And she clothed Jacob, her youngest son;

27:16

And the skins of the goat kids she put on his hands,

And over the smoothness of his neck;

27:17

Then she placed the tasty dish,

together with the bread that she had made,

Into the hand of Jacob her son.

27:18

And he went to his father,

and he said “My father”;

And he answered “Behold here I am,—

which one are you, my son?”

27:19

Then Jacob said to his father:

“I am Esau your firstborn, —

I have prepared exactly what you spoke to me;

I pray thee arise — sit up,

And eat of my game, so that in transition your soul may bless me!”

27:20

But Isaac said to his son:

“How on earth were you so quick finding it, my son?!”

And he answered,

“Because the LORD your God made it happen before me.”

27:21

Then Isaac said to Jacob:

“Step forward please that I may touch you, my son.”

“Are you really my son Esau, or not?!”

27:22

And Jacob drew near to Isaac his father,

And he handled him,

Then he said:

“The voice is the voice of Jacob,

but the hands are the hands of Esau!”

27:23

But he did not recognise him

Since his hands were

like the hands of Esau his brother, hairy;

And so he blessed him:

27:24

And he said: “You are really my son Esau?”

And he answered: “I am.”

27:25

And he said:

“Step forward for me
that I can eat of your game my son,

so that my soul can bless you.”

So he had drawn near him, and he ate,
Then he brought him wine, and he drank.

27:26

And then Isaac his father said to him:

“Draw near I pray thee and kiss me, my son.”

27:27

And he drew near and kissed him,

And he sensed the smell on his raiment,
and he blessed him;

And he said, “look!, the scent of my son!

It is like the fragrance of the open field,
that which the LORD has blessed;”

27:28

So may God give you

of the dew of heaven,
and the fertilities of the earth;

And abundance of grain and new wine;

27:29

“Let peoples serve you,

And nations bow themselves to you,

Be master to your relatives,

and may the descendants of your mother
bow themselves to you;

Those cursing you will be cursed,
and those blessing you will be blessed”

27:30

Now it happened,

When Isaac had finished blessing Jacob,

That it came about Jacob had only just gone out

from the presence of Isaac his father,

Then Esau his brother came in from his hunt.

27:31

And he also made a tasty dish,
and brought it to his father;

Then he said to his father:

“Let my father arise that he may eat
from his son’s game,

So that your soul may bless me!”

27:32

But his father Isaac said to him:

“Who are you?!”

And he answered:

“I am your firstborn son, Esau!”

27:33

Then Isaac visibly trembled a very intense shaking;

And he said: “Who then

Is he who hunted game and brought it to me?!”

“And I partook of all before you came,
and I blessed him,—

Yet blessed, will he be.”

27:34

When Esau heard the words of his father,

Then he cried out screaming,

Intensely and bitterly, unto the uttermost.

Then he said to his father,

“Bless me — also me, my father!!”

27:35

And he (Isaac) said:
“Your brother came by fraud,

And he took away your blessing.”

27:36

And he (Esau) said:

“Indeed He appropriately named him
Jacob (he will take by the heel).”

“And Jacob defrauded me these two times,—
he has taken my birth-right,

And behold NOW he has taken my blessing!

Furthermore he said: “Have you not reserved me a blessing?”

27:37

But Isaac responded and said to Esau:

“Behold I have ordained him master to you,

and all his relatives,
I have granted to him for servants,

together with grain and new wine I have sustained him;

So for you then, what can I do, my son?”

27:38

Then Esau said to his father:

“A single blessing — what is it to you, my father!?

Bless me, even me, my father!!”

Then Esau lifted up his voice, and he wept.

27:39

Then Isaac his father responded,
and he said to him:

“Behold, out of the fertilities of the earth
shall be your habitation,

And of the dew of heaven from above;”

27:40

But by your sword you shall live,

And your brother you shall serve;

And it shall come to pass, when you grow restless,

Then you shall tear away his yoke from over your neck;

27:41

Now Esau was hostile to Jacob,
on account of the blessing

wherewith his father had endued him;

And Esau muttered with his heart:

“The days of mourning my father approach,

And then I shall slay Jacob my brother.”

27:42

But it was reported to Rebecca,—
the words of Esau her eldest son;

And she sent and called for Jacob
her younger son,

And she said to him,
“Behold, Esau your brother,

He is comforting himself concerning you,
by plotting to assassinate you.”

27:43

“And now my son, heed my voice,

And arise, flee,— get yourself away
to Laban my brother, to Haran.”

27:44

“And you will stay with him a few days,

Until when the rage of your brother shall recede;”

27:45

Until the turning of your brother’s anger away from you,

And he forgets what you did to him,

Then I will send and fetch you from there;

For why should I lose both of you in one day!”

27:46

Now Rebecca said to Isaac,

“I have loathed my life,
because of the daughters of Heth;

If Jacob is going to take

a wife from the daughters of Heth,
the like of these, from the daughters of the land,

For what purpose to me is life?!!”
