Genesis 32:4
And Jacob sent messengers before him,
To Esau his brother,
To the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
Genesis 32:5
And he commanded them, saying:
“Thus shall ye say, to my lord, to Esau:
‘Thus sayeth your servant Jacob:
With Laban I sojourned, and I tarried, until now’ ”;
Genesis 32:6
“ ‘And I have bullock and beast-of-burden,
Flock, together with male and female servant;
I have sent to make known to my lord,
In order to find favour in your sight.’ ”
Genesis 32:7
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying:
“We went to your brother, to Esau,
and moreover, he is proceeding to meet you,
And four hundred men with him.”
Genesis 32:8
And Jacob feared exceedingly,
and it was distressful for him;
And he divided the people who were with him,
And the flock and the herd and the camels,
Into two camps;
Genesis 32:9
Since he thought,
“If Esau comes to the one camp,
and he smites it,
Then the remaining camp will become a deliverance;”
Genesis 32:10
And Jacob said:
“O God of my father Abraham,
and God of my father Isaac;
LORD, the One who said to me:
‘Return to your country and to your birthplace,
And I will deal well with you.’ ”
Genesis 32:11
“I am unworthy and fall short of
all the mercies and all the faithfulness,
That you have shown towards your servant;
For with my staff, I crossed this Jordan,
And now I have become two camps.”
Genesis 32:12
“Save me I pray Thee,
from the hand of my brother, from Esau;
For I am in fear of him,
lest he should come and smite me,
and mother, down to the children!”
Genesis 32:13
“Since You have said:
‘Surely I shall make it well with you;
And I will set your Seed as the sand of the sea,
That is uncountable for vastness!’ ”
Genesis 32:14
And he lodged there, on the same night;
Then he fetched, from what had come into his possession, —
an offering, for Esau his brother:
Genesis 32:15
Two hundred she-goats, and twenty he-goats;
One hundred ewes, and twenty rams;
Genesis 32:16
Nursing camels, together with their colts, thirty;
Forty cows and ten bulls,
Twenty female donkeys, and male donkeys, ten.
Genesis 32:17
And he placed them in the custody of his servants,
each herd by itself;
Then he said to his servants —
“Cross over before me,
And you must put an interval between each herd;”
Genesis 32:18
And he instructed the first, saying:
“When Esau my brother confronts you,
And he interrogates you, saying,
‘Whose are you and where are you going,
And whose are these in front of you?’ ”
Genesis 32:19
“Then you shall say, ‘of your servant, of Jacob:
It is a gift having been sent to my lord, to Esau;
And behold, he too will be behind us’ ”
Genesis 32:20
And he instructed also the second,
moreover, the third,
Even everyone who went
behind the herds, saying:
“According to this word shall you speak to Esau,
When ye come across him;”
Genesis 32:21
“And ye must also have said:
‘Behold, your servant Jacob will be behind us’ ”;
For he thought:
“I could pacify his countenance,
with the gift that goes before me,
Then afterwards, I will see his face, —
Perhaps he will be favourably disposed towards my presence.”
Genesis 32:22
And so the gift went over before him;
But he himself had stayed overnight at the camp;
Genesis 32:23
And he arose during that night,
and he took his two wives and his two bondmaids,
And his eleven boys;
Then he crossed the Jabbok ford;
Genesis 32:24
And so he took them,
and conducted them over the stream;
And he transferred them,
together with that which he had;
Genesis 32:25
But Jacob remained by himself;
And then One wrestled with him,
Until the rising of the morning twilight;
Genesis 32:26
And He took note that He had not prevailed against him,
And He struck his hip socket;
And so Jacob’s hip socket was dislocated,
while he wrestled with Him;
Genesis 32:27
Then He said
“Let Me go, for the morning twilight has risen!”
Then he said,
“I will not let you go,
unless you have blessed me;”
Genesis 32:28
Then He said to him,
“What is your name!?”
And he said, “Jacob”;
Genesis 32:29
Then He said,
“No longer shall your name be called ‘Jacob’,
But rather ‘Israel’;
(He will contend with God – God will contend –
– May God prevail over Evil)
For you have wrestled with God and with men,
And then you endured!”
Genesis 32:30
And Jacob begged, and he said,
“Please declare Your Name;”
But He said,
“Why is this:
You would ask My Name!?”
And He blessed him there.
Genesis 32:31
And Jacob named that place PeniEl (The Face of God)….
“For I have seen God Face to face,
And my soul/being/life was freed-up!”
Genesis 32:32
And the sun shone for him,
When he had gone past Penuel,
But he was limping due to his hip.
Genesis 32:33
Therefore, the children of Israel will not eat
the sciatic nerve that is at the hip socket,
Up to this day;
Because He had struck the hip socket of Jacob,
on the sciatic nerve.
