Genesis 33:1
And Jacob lifted his eyes,
And he looked,
and behold Esau was coming,
And with him, the four hundred men;
And so he divided the boys among Leah,
and among Rachel,
And among the two bondmaids.
Genesis 33:2
And he placed the bondmaids, and their boys, first;
Then Leah and her boys, behind,
And then Rachel and Joseph, last;
Genesis 33:3
But he himself had crossed over in front of them;
And he prostrated himself to the earth seven times,
Until drawing near him, even to his brother.
Genesis 33:4
And Esau ran to meet him and he embraced him,
And he fell onto the sides of his neck,
and he kissed him (totally out of character to Esau’s need for vengeance);
And they wept.
Genesis 33:5
And he lifted his eyes,
And he noticed the women and the boys,
And he said, “What are these in relation to you?”
And he said,
“The boys that God has graciously given your servant;”
And the bondmaids stepped forward,
they and their boys,
And they (the bondmaids) bowed themselves;
Genesis 33:7
And Leah also approached together with her boys,
and they bowed themselves;
And after, Joseph had stepped forward, and Rachel,
and they bowed themselves;
Genesis 33:8
And he said,
“What’s the purpose for you, –
All this company,
that I have encountered?”
And he said,
“In order to find favour in the eyes of my lord”;
Genesis 33:9
Then Esau said,
“For myself there is abundance;
My brother, let it be yours, what is yours;”
Genesis 33:10
Then Jacob said:
“No! Please! — If now I have found favour in your eyes,
Then receive my gift from my hand!
Forasmuch as I have seen your face, —
Like seeing the face of God, —
and you accepted me favourably;”
Genesis 33:11
“Please receive my gift-blessing
that had been brought for you,
Because God has dealt graciously with me,
and indeed I have everything;”
And so he urged him, then he accepted.
Genesis 33:12
And he said,
“Let us set out and let us proceed;
And I will go in front of you;”
Genesis 33:13
But he said to him:
“My lord knows that the boys are delicate,
And the flocks and the herds,
that are nursing depend on me;
Then they will drive them hard a single day,
And they will die, all the flocks!”
Genesis 33:14
I pray thee let my lord go on ahead of his servant;
Then I myself can move on gently,
According to the customary pace of those before me,
and according to the footpace of the boys;
Until when I shall go to my lord, to Seir”;
Genesis 33:15
And Esau said,
“Please let me place in company with you,
some of the people who are with me”;
But he said, “Why is this?…
Let me find favour in the eyes of my lord”;
Genesis 33:16
And so Esau on the same day
made his way back,
Towards Seir;
Genesis 33:17
Now Jacob moved to a succah (temporary shelter),
And he built him a dwelling;
And he had made a shelter for his cattle;
Therefore he had named the place Succoth.
Genesis 33:18
……. And Jacob came at peace to the city of Shechem,
That was in the land of Canaan,
When he came from Padan Aram;
And he encamped before the city;
Genesis 33:19
And he acquired the plot of open country,
Whither he had spread his tent,
from the hand of the sons of Hamor (Donkey),
the father of Shechem (Shoulder);
At the price of 100 Kesitah (100 lamb equivalent units);
Genesis 33:20
And there he set up an altar of sacrifice;
And by it he invoked God, The God of Israel.
