Genesis 34

Genesis 34:1

… Now Dinah went away, the daughter of Leah,

whom she had borne to Jacob:

In order to become acquainted with
the daughters of the land;

Genesis 34:2

And Shechem (shoulder)
the son of Hamor (donkey) the Hivite (villager),
The prince of the land, took note of her;

And he took her and laid with her,
and humbled her sexually;

Genesis 34:3

But his soul clung to Dinah,
Jacob’s daughter,

And he loved the unmarried girl,

and he spoke to the heart of that girl;

Genesis 34:4

Then Shechem ordered Hamor his father, saying,

“Get me this marriageable girl for a wife!”

Genesis 34:5

Now Jacob heard

that he had defiled Dinah his daughter,

Now his sons were with his livestock in the field;

But Jacob kept silent, until their arrival;

Genesis 34:6

And Hamor the father of Shechem went to Jacob,

To speak with him;

Genesis 34:7

Now the sons of Jacob had come in from the field
when they heard,

And the men felt hurt,
and it was kindled for them, intensely;

For a disgraceful action had been done against Israel:

To lay sexually with the daughter of Jacob,
since such should not be done.

Genesis 34:8

And Hamor spoke with them saying:

“My son Shechem,
his soul has become very attached to your daughter, —

Please give her to him, for a wife”

Genesis 34:9

“And intermarry with us:

You can give us your daughters;

And our daughters you can take for yourselves;”

Genesis 34:10

“Then with us you will dwell:

And the land will be before you, —

Remain and trade,
and hold property in it.”

Genesis 34:11

And then Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, —

“Let me find favour in your eyes:

Then whatever you say to me, I will give!”

Genesis 34:12

“Greatly increase upon me a dowry and gift,

And I shall give, according as you say to me;

But give me the girl for a wife!”

Genesis 34:13

And the sons of Jacob answered

Shechem and Hamor his father in deceit,
and they spoke;

In that he had fornicated with Dinah their sister;

Genesis 34:14

And they said to them,

“We are unable to do this thing,

To give our sister

To a man who has a foreskin:

Because it is a disgrace to us;”

Genesis 34:15

“But in this we will commit ourselves to you:

If you will become like us,

by being circumcised yourselves, every male;”—

Genesis 34:16

“Then we will give our daughters to you,

And we will take your daughter for ourselves,

And then we will dwell with you,
and we will become one nation.”

Genesis 34:17

“But if you should not hearken to us,
to be circumcised,

Then we will take our daughter,
and we will go.”

Genesis 34:18

Now their words were pleasing,
in the eyes of Hamor,

And in the eyes of Shechem the son of Hamor;

Genesis 34:19

And the young man did not hesitate to perform the thing,

Because he delighted in the daughter of Jacob;

And so he was demonstrating himself more honourable
than all his father’s household.

Genesis 34:20

Then Hamor and Shechem his son
came to the gate of their city;

And they spoke to the men of their city, saying:

Genesis 34:21

“These men, they are at peace with us,

So let them dwell in the land
And let them trade in it,

And the land, behold, is wide on both sides before them;

Their daughters we can take for ourselves as wives,

Then we can give them our daughters;”

Genesis 34:22

“Only in this,

The men will commit themselves to us,
to dwell with us,

To become one people:

On ourselves becoming circumcised,

Just as they themselves are circumcised.”

Genesis 34:23

“Their livestock and their property,
together with all their agricultural and transport animals,

Will they not be ours?

Surely, we should consent to them,
Then they will settle with us.”

Genesis 34:24

And they hearkened to Hamor
and to Shechem his son,

Everyone who came out of the gate of his city;

And so every male was circumcised,
Everyone who came out of the gate of his city;

Genesis 34:25

And it happened on the third day
while they were suffering traumatic fever, —

That two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi,

Brothers of Dinah, each took his sword,

And they came against the city, securely;

And they murdered every male;

Genesis 34:26

Now they had killed Hamor and Shechem his son
by the mouth of the sword;

And they took Dinah from Shechem’s house and came forth;

Genesis 34:27

The sons of Jacob,

They had fallen upon the pierced,
and they plundered the city:

Their flocks and their herds,
together with their beasts of burden;

And so whatever was in the city,
and whatever was in the field,
They had taken;

Genesis 34:29

And all their wealth,

And all their little children, and all their wives,
They had captured, and they plundered:

Together with all that was in the house/s.

Genesis 34:30

Then Jacob said to Simeon and to Levi, —

“You have brought me disaster,

By making me stink among the inhabitants of the land,

Among the Cannanites, and among the Perizzites (open-country people);

Now I consist of few men,
And they will gather themselves against me and they will strike me,

And I will be exterminated, I and my household;”

Genesis 34:31

But they said:

“Must he treat our sister as a harlot?!”
