Genesis 35:1
Now God said to Jacob:
“Arise, Go up to BethEl (The House of God),
and dwell there;
And there prepare an altar,
to The God, The One Who appeared to you,
When you fled from the face of Esau your brother;”
Genesis 35:2
And Jacob said to his household,
And to all those who were with him:
“Discard the foreign gods that are in your midst,
And purify yourselves,
Then change your attire;”
Genesis 35:3
“And let us arise and let us go up to BethEl:
And there I shall prepare an altar,
To The God Who answered me
in the time of my distress,
and has been steadfast with me,
On the road that I have walked.”
Genesis 35:4
And so they handed over to Jacob,
Every foreign god that was in their possession,
Together with the rings which were in their ears;
Then Jacob concealed them,
Underneath the mighty tree that was by Shechem.
Genesis 35:5
And they moved on;
And the Terror of God was
over the cities that were round about them,
And they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
Genesis 35:6
And Jacob came to Luz,
That was in the land of Canaan,
namely, BethEl,
himself, and all the people who were with him;
Genesis 35:7
And there he built the altar,
and he called the place
“God of the House of God”
Because there The True God had revealed himself to him,
When he fled from the face of his brother.
Genesis 35:8
And Deborah died, who nursed Rebecca,
And she was buried below Bethel,
underneath the big tree,
And he named it, “The Big Tree of Weeping”.
Genesis 35:9
And God appeared to Jacob again,
When he came from Padan Aram;
And He blessed him:
Genesis 35:10
And God said to him,
“Your name ‘Jacob’:
No longer will your name be called Jacob,
But Israel will be your name.”
And so He called his name Israel.
Genesis 35:11
And God said to him,
“I Am El Shaddai (The Omnipotent-Sufficient One),
Be fruitful and multiply, —
A nation and an assembly of nations,
they will come into existence from you;
And kings will come out of your loins;”
Genesis 35:12
“And the land,
That I gave to Abraham and to Isaac,
To you I will give it;
And to your seed after you,
I will give the land;”
Genesis 35:13
And God ascended away from him,
At the place where He had spoken with him.
Genesis 35:14
And Jacob set up a pillar,
At that place where He had spoken with him, –
a pillar of stone;
Then he poured out a drink offering over it,
and then poured olive oil upon it;
Genesis 35:15
And Jacob named that place BethEl (The House of God),
There where God had spoken with him.
Genesis 35:16
And they journeyed from Beth El,
And there was yet a stretch of land,
in order to come to Ephratah,
But Rachel gave birth,
And she had severe difficulty while she was in labour;
Genesis 35:17
And so it was when she was in trauma
while she gave birth,
That the one assisting as midwife said to her:
“Do not fear,
for also this one is a son for you;”
Genesis 35:18
And it came to pass,
when her breath was departing, for she died,
That she named him BenOni (Son of my distress);
But his father, he had called him Benjamin
(Son of the Right Hand/Power).
Genesis 35:19
So Rachel died;
And she was buried on the way to Ephratah,
That is, Bethlehem (House of Bread ).
Genesis 35:20
And Jacob set up a pillar over her grave;
It is the pillar of Rachel’s grave upto this day.
Genesis 35:21
And Israel broke camp.
And then he spread out his tent beyond Migdal Eder (Flock Tower);
Genesis 35:22
And it happened,
when Israel had settled in that territory,
That Reuben went and lay with Bilhah,
his father’s adjunct-wife,
And Israel heard.
Now the sons of Israel were twelve in number :
Genesis 35:23
The sons of Leah:
The firstborn of Jacob, Reuben;
And Simeon and Levi,
And then Issachar, and Zebulun;
Genesis 35:24
The sons of Rachel:
Joseph and Benjamin;
Genesis 35:25
And the sons of Bilhah,
Rachel’s maidservant,
Dan and Naphtali;
Genesis 35:26
And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maidservant
Gad and Asher.
These were the sons of Jacob,
That were begotten to him in Paddan Aram.
Genesis 35:27
And Jacob came to Isaac his father,
Mamre, the City of the Four,
That is Hebron, there where Abraham had sojourned, and Isaac.
Genesis 35:28
Now the days of Isaac, they were
one hundred years, plus eighty years;
Genesis 35:29
And Isaac exhaled his last breath,
and he was gathered to his people,
Old and complete of days;
And Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.
