Genesis 36:1
וְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּלְד֥וֹת עֵשָׂ֖ו ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם׃
Now these were the descendants of Esau, —
he was Edom:
Genesis 36:2
עֵשָׂ֛ו לָקַ֥ח אֶת־נָשָׁ֖יו מִבְּנ֣וֹת כְּנָ֑עַן
Esau had taken his wives from the daughters of Canaan:
אֶת־עָדָ֗ה בַּת־אֵילוֹן֙ הַֽחִתִּ֔י
Adah (ornament),
the daughter of Elon (mighty tree/oak/terebinth) the Hittite,
וְאֶת־אָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ בַּת־עֲנָ֔ה
and AhoLivaMah (my high place tent),
the sibling-daughter of Anah (afflicted),
בַּת־צִבְע֖וֹן הֽ͏ַחִוִּֽי׃
the actual-daughter of Tsivon (Anah’s father), the Hivite;
Genesis 36:3
וְאֶת־בָּשְׂמַ֥ת בַּת־יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל
And also Basemath (sweet/fragrant) the daughter of Ishmael,
אֲח֥וֹת נְבָיֽוֹת׃
the sister of Nebaioth (heights);
Genesis 36:4
וַתֵּ֧לֶד עָדָ֛ה לְעֵשָׂ֖ו אֶת־אֱלִיפָ֑ז
And Adah bore Eliphaz
(firstborn-see vs15/my God is pure gold) to Esau,
וּבָ֣שְׂמַ֔ת יָלְדָ֖ה אֶת־רְעוּאֵֽל׃
And Basemath, she had borne Reuel (friend of God);
Genesis 36:5
וְאָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ יָֽלְדָ֔ה
Now AhoLivaMah, she had borne
אֶת־יעיש יְע֥וּשׁ וְאֶת־יַעְלָ֖ם וְאֶת־קֹ֑רַח
YeUsh (He will help)
and YaLam (he will become a dark people),
and Korach (ice):
אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י עֵשָׂ֔ו
These were the sons of Esau,
אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻלְּדוּ־ל֖וֹ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃
That were begotten to him,
In the land of Canaan.
Genesis 36:6
וַיִּקַּ֣ח עֵשָׂ֡ו אֶת־נָ֠שָׁיו
And Esau, he took his wives,
וְאֶת־בָּנָ֣יו וְאֶת־בְּנֹתָיו֮
and his sons and his daughters,
וְאֶת־כָּל־נַפְשׁ֣וֹת בֵּיתוֹ֒
and all the persons of his household,
וְאֶת־מִקְנֵ֣הוּ וְאֶת־כָּל־בְּהֶמְתּ֗וֹ
and his livestock and all his agricultural and transport animals,
וְאֵת֙ כָּל־קִנְיָנ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָכַ֖שׁ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן
Together with every possession, that which he had acquired in the land of Canaan;
וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אֶל־אֶ֔רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֖י יַעֲקֹ֥ב אָחִֽיו׃
And he went to territory away from the presence of Jacob his brother;
Genesis 36:7
כִּֽי־הָיָ֧ה רְכוּשָׁ֛ם רָ֖ב מִשֶּׁ֣בֶת יַחְדָּ֑ו
For their property had become too great
for dwelling together;
וְלֹ֨א יֽ͏ָכְלָ֜ה אֶ֤רֶץ מְגֽוּרֵיהֶם֙ לָשֵׂ֣את אֹתָ֔ם
And the land of their sojournings was unable to carry them,
מִפְּנֵ֖י מִקְנֵיהֶֽם׃
Due to their livestock;
Genesis 36:8
וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב עֵשָׂו֙ בְּהַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר
Then Esau dwelt in the hill country of Seir;
עֵשָׂ֖ו ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם׃ס
Esau, he was Edom.
Genesis 36:9
וְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּלְד֥וֹת עֵשָׂ֖ו אֲבִ֣י אֱד֑וֹם
Now these were the descendants of Esau,
the ancestor of the Edomites,
בְּהַ֖ר שֵׂעִֽיר׃
In the hill country of Seir:
Genesis 36:10
אֵ֖לֶּה שְׁמ֣וֹת בְּנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו
These were the names of the sons of Esau:
אֱלִיפַ֗ז בֶּן־עָדָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֔ו
Eliphaz, the son of Adah, the wife of Esau;
רְעוּאֵ֕ל בֶּן־בָּשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
ReuEl, the son of Basemath, the wife of Esau;
Genesis 36:11
וַיִּהְי֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י אֱלִיפָ֑ז
And the sons of Eliphaz, they were:
תֵּימָ֣ן אוֹמָ֔ר
Teman (Dexter/right side/south/region in Idumaea),
Omar (eloquent),
צְפ֥וֹ וְגַעְתָּ֖ם
Tsepho (watch tower) and Gatam (striking has ended),
וּקְנַֽז׃
And Kenaz (eponymous name for an Arabian country).
Genesis 36:12
וְתִמְנַ֣ע ׀ הָיְתָ֣ה פִילֶ֗גֶשׁ
Now Timnah (withheld), she had been adjunct-wife,
לֶֽאֱלִיפַז֙ בֶּן־עֵשָׂ֔ו
to Eliphaz, Esau’s son,
וַתֵּ֥לֶד לֶאֱלִיפַ֖ז אֶת־עֲמָלֵ֑ק
And to Eliphaz she bore Amalek
(clan tearing to pieces/wrenching off/taking spoil).
אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י עָדָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
These were the progeny of Adah, Esau’s wife.
Genesis 36:13
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י רְעוּאֵ֔ל
And these were the sons of ReuEl (friend of God),
נַ֥חַת וָזֶ֖רַח
Nachat (pure, calm, patience) and Zerach (sunrise, shining forth)
שַׁמָּ֣ה וּמִזָּ֑ה
Shammah (astonishment, desolation) and Mizzah (faint, fear);
אֵ֣לֶּ֣ה הָי֔וּ בְּנֵ֥י בָשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
These were the progeny of Basemath, the wife of Esau;
Genesis 36:14
וְאֵ֣לֶּה הָי֗וּ
Now these were
בְּנֵ֨י אָהֳלִיבָמָ֧ה בַת־עֲנָ֛ה בַּת־צִבְע֖וֹן
the sons of AholivaMah –
the sibling-daughter of Anah,
the actual daughter of Tsivon (Anah’s father),–
אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֑ו
The wife of Esau;
וַתֵּ֣לֶד לְעֵשָׂ֔ו
And she bore to Esau —
אֶת־יעיש יְע֥וּשׁ וְאֶת־יַעְלָ֖ם וְאֶת־קֹֽרַח׃ס
Yeush and Ya’lam, and Korach.
Genesis 36:15
אֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־עֵשָׂ֑ו
These were the tribal chiefs of the sons of Esau:
בְּנֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּכ֣וֹר עֵשָׂ֔ו
Of the sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn of Esau, —
אַלּ֤וּף תֵּימָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף אוֹמָ֔ר
Chief Teman, Chief Omar,
אַלּ֥וּף צְפ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וּף קְנַֽז׃
Chief Tsepho, Chief Kenaz;
Genesis 36:16
אַלּֽוּף־קֹ֛רַח אַלּ֥וּף גַּעְתָּ֖ם אַלּ֣וּף עֲמָלֵ֑ק
Chief Korach (3rd son of Esau by Aholivamah),
Chief Ga’tam (4th son of Eliphaz under Adah),
Chief Amalek (the son of Eliphaz through Timnah).
אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֤י אֱלִיפַז֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֔וֹם
These were the Chiefs of Eliphaz,
in the territory of Edom,
אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י עָדָֽה׃
These were the Progeny of Adah.
Genesis 36:17
וְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵ֤י רְעוּאֵל֙ בֶּן־עֵשָׂ֔ו
And these were the sons of Reuel, the son of Esau:
אַלּ֥וּף נַ֙חַת֙ אַלּ֣וּף זֶ֔רַח
Chief Nachat, Chief Zerach,
אַלּ֥וּף שַׁמָּ֖ה אַלּ֣וּף מִזָּ֑ה
Chief ShamMah,
Chief MizZah;
אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֤י רְעוּאֵל֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֔וֹם
The were the tribal chiefs of Reuel in the territory of Edom,
אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י בָשְׂמַ֖ת אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
These were the progeny of Basemath, the wife of Esau;
Genesis 36:18
וְאֵ֗לֶּה בְּנֵ֤י אָהֳלִֽיבָמָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת עֵשָׂ֔ו
Now these were the sons of AhoLivaMah, the wife of Esau,
אַלּ֥וּף יְע֛וּשׁ אַלּ֥וּף יַעְלָ֖ם אַלּ֣וּף קֹ֑רַח
Chief YeUsh, Chief Ya’Lam,
Chief Korach;
אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֞י
These were the tribal chiefs
אָֽהֳלִיבָמָ֛ה בַּת־עֲנָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת עֵשָֽׂו׃
By AholivaMah the daughter of Anah, the wife of Esau;
Genesis 36:19
אֵ֧לֶּה בְנֵי־עֵשָׂ֛ו
These were the sons of Esau,
וְאֵ֥לֶּה אַלּוּפֵיהֶ֖ם
And these were their tribal chiefs,
ה֥וּא אֱדֽוֹם׃ס
That is Edom.
Genesis 36:20
אֵ֤לֶּה בְנֵֽי־שֵׂעִיר֙ הַחֹרִ֔י יֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָ֑רֶץ
These were the sons of Seir (hairy) the Horite (cavern dwellers),
the inhabiters of the land:
לוֹטָ֥ן וְשׁוֹבָ֖ל וְצִבְע֥וֹן וַעֲנָֽה׃
Lotan (concealed) and Shoval (flowing),
Then Tsivon and Anah;
Genesis 36:21
וְדִשׁ֥וֹן וְאֵ֖צֶר וְדִישָׁ֑ן
And Dishon (fatness) and Etzer (treasure),
and Dishan (threshing country):
אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֧י הַחֹרִ֛י
These were the tribal chiefs of the Horites,
בְּנֵ֥י שֵׂעִ֖יר בְּאֶ֥רֶץ אֱדֽוֹם׃
The sons of Seir, in the territory of Edom;
Genesis 36:22
וַיִּהְי֥וּ בְנֵי־לוֹטָ֖ן חֹרִ֣י וְהֵימָ֑ם
And were the sons of Lotan:
Hori and Heiman (set in commotion);
וַאֲח֥וֹת לוֹטָ֖ן תִּמְנָֽע׃
And Lotan’s sister was Timna;
Genesis 36:23
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ בְּנֵ֣י שׁוֹבָ֔ל
And these were the sons of Shoval,
עַלְוָ֥ן וּמָנַ֖חַת וְעֵיבָ֑ל
Alvan (unjust) and MaNachat (resting place),
and EiVal (stripped of foliage);
שְׁפ֖וֹ וְאוֹנָֽם׃
Shepho (prominent) and Onam (nothingness of themselves);
Genesis 36:24
וְאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־צִבְע֖וֹן וְאַיָּ֣ה וַעֲנָ֑ה
And these were the sons of Tsivon,
Both Ayah (falcon) and Anah (afflicted);
ה֣וּא עֲנָ֗ה
This was Anah,
אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָצָ֤א אֶת־הַיֵּמִם֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר
He who had found the water in the desert,
בִּרְעֹת֥וֹ אֶת־הַחֲמֹרִ֖ים לְצִבְע֥וֹן אָבִֽיו׃
While he was pasturing the donkeys for Tsivon his father;
Genesis 36:25
וְאֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־עֲנָ֖ה דִּשֹׁ֑ן
And these were the children of Anah,
Dishon (fatness diminished);
וְאָהֳלִיבָמָ֖ה בַּת־עֲנָֽה׃
And Aholivamah, the sibling-daughter of Anah;
Genesis 36:26
וְאֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י דִישָׁ֑ן
Now these were the sons of Dishan (threshing country):
חֶמְדָּ֥ן וְאֶשְׁבָּ֖ן
HemDan (desired judge) and EshBan (fire built),
וְיִתְרָ֥ן וּכְרָֽן׃
Both YetRan (abundance of joy) and CheRan (harp);
Genesis 36:27
אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵי־אֵ֑צֶר
These were the sons of Etzer (treasure):
בִּלְהָ֥ן וְזַעֲוָ֖ן
BilHan (troubled) and Za’aVan (agitated),
וַעֲקָֽן׃
And Akan (quick);
Genesis 36:28
אֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵֽי־דִישָׁ֖ן
These were the sons of Dishan:
ע֥וּץ וַאֲרָֽן׃
Uz (collective counsel) and Aran (agile);
Genesis 36:29
אֵ֖לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֣י הַחֹרִ֑י
These were the tribal chiefs of the Horites:
אַלּ֤וּף לוֹטָן֙ אַלּ֣וּף שׁוֹבָ֔ל
Chief Lotan, Chief Shoval,
אַלּ֥וּף צִבְע֖וֹן אַלּ֥וּף עֲנָֽה׃
Chief Tsivon, Chief Anah;
Genesis 36:30
אַלּ֥וּף דִּשֹׁ֛ן אַלּ֥וּף אֵ֖צֶר אַלּ֣וּף דִּישָׁ֑ן
Chief Dishon, Chief Etzer, Chief Dishan;
אֵ֣לֶּה אַלּוּפֵ֧י הַחֹרִ֛י לְאַלֻּפֵיהֶ֖ם
These were the tribal chiefs of the Horites,
namely their own chiefs,
בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שֵׂעִֽיר׃ פ
In the Land of Seir.
Genesis 36:31
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַמְּלָכִ֔ים
Now these were the kings,
אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָלְכ֖וּ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֱד֑וֹם
They who had reigned, in the territory of Edom;
לִפְנֵ֥י מְלָךְ־מֶ֖לֶךְ לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
Ahead of any king reigning,
belonging to the sons of Israel:
Genesis 36:32
וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ בֶּאֱד֔וֹם
And there reigned in Edom
בֶּ֖לַע בֶּן־בְּע֑וֹר
Bela (Engulpher and Destroyer)
the son of Be’or (Incendiary and Devastator);
וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ דִּנְהָֽבָה׃
And the name of his city:
DinHavah (Judgement is Coming);
Genesis 36:33
וַיָּ֖מָת בָּ֑לַע
Then Bela, he died;
וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו יוֹבָ֥ב בֶּן־זֶ֖רַח מִבָּצְרָֽה׃
And in his stead reigned Yovav (Jehovah cries out)
the son of Zerach (shining forth),
from BotzRah (Coming to Adversity);
Genesis 36:34
וַיָּ֖מָת יוֹבָ֑ב
Then YoVav, he died,
וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו חֻשָׁ֖ם מֵאֶ֥רֶץ הַתֵּימָנִֽי׃
And in his stead reigned Chusham (their haste),
from the territory of the Temanites;
Genesis 36:35
וַיָּ֖מָת חֻשָׁ֑ם
Then ChuSham, he died:
וַיִּמְלֹ֨ךְ תַּחְתָּ֜יו הֲדַ֣ד בֶּן־בְּדַ֗ד
And in his stead reigned
HaDad (weather god/heavy sound/thunder god/Ba’al)
the son of BeDad (separatist);
הַמַּכֶּ֤ה אֶת־מִדְיָן֙ בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה מוֹאָ֔ב
It was he who smote Midian (controversialist)
in the territory of Moab;
וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ עֲוִֽית׃
And the name of his city was
Avit (perverse/bent/twisted) ;
Genesis 36:36
וַיָּ֖מָת הֲדָ֑ד
Then Hadad, he died;
וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו שַׂמְלָ֖ה מִמַּשְׂרֵקָֽה׃
And in his place reigned SamLah (outer garment),
from MasreKah (vineyard of the valued bright-red grape);
Genesis 36:37
וַיָּ֖מָת שַׂמְלָ֑ה
Then SamLah, he died;
וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו
And in his stead reigned
שָׁא֖וּל מֵרְחֹב֥וֹת הַנָּהָֽר׃
Shaul (asked for) from Rehovot (wide open places) at the River;
Genesis 36:38
וַיָּ֖מָת שָׁא֑וּל
Then Shaul, he died,
וַיִּמְלֹ֣ךְ תַּחְתָּ֔יו בַּ֥עַל חָנָ֖ן בֶּן־עַכְבּֽוֹר׃
And in his stead reigned
Ba’al ChaNan (merciful lord)
the son of Ben-AchBor (Mouse);
Genesis 36:39
וַיָּמָת֮ בַּ֣עַל חָנָ֣ן בֶּן־עַכְבּוֹר֒
Then Ba’al ChanNan the son of AchBor, he died;
וַיִּמְלֹ֤ךְ תַּחְתָּיו֙ הֲדַ֔ר
And in his stead reigned Hadar (splendour and majesty),
וְשֵׁ֥ם עִיר֖וֹ פָּ֑עוּ
And the name of his city was Pa’u (groaning and complaining),
וְשֵׁ֨ם אִשְׁתּ֤וֹ מְהֵֽיטַבְאֵל֙ בַּת־מַטְרֵ֔ד
and the name of his wife MehetavEl (God does good),
the familial-daughter of Matred (continual dripping),
בַּ֖ת מֵ֥י זָהָֽב׃ס
the actual-daughter of Mei Zahav (waters of gold).
Genesis 36:40
וְ֠אֵלֶּה שְׁמ֞וֹת אַלּוּפֵ֤י עֵשָׂו֙ לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֔ם
Then these were the names of the tribal chiefs of Esau,
according to their families,
לִמְקֹמֹתָ֖ם בִּשְׁמֹתָ֑ם
corresponding to their positions,
through their reputations:
אַלּ֥וּף תִּמְנָ֛ע אַלּ֥וּף עַֽלְוָ֖ה אַלּ֥וּף יְתֵֽת׃
Chief Timnah (restraint), Chief Alvah,
Chief Yetet;
Genesis 36:41
אַלּ֧וּף אָהֳלִיבָמָ֛ה
Chief Aholivamah (my tent of the high place),
אַלּ֥וּף אֵלָ֖ה אַלּ֥וּף פִּינֹֽן׃
Chief Elah (massive tree),
Chief Pinon (perplexing commands);
Genesis 36:42
אַלּ֥וּף קְנַ֛ז
Chief Kenaz
אַלּ֥וּף תֵּימָ֖ן אַלּ֥וּף מִבְצָֽר׃
Chief Teman (the south/Idumaea),
Chief MivTsar (fortification);
Genesis 36:43
אַלּ֥וּף מַגְדִּיאֵ֖ל אַלּ֣וּף עִירָ֑ם
Chief MagdiEl (my excellence is God),
Chief Iram (He watches and protects them):
אֵ֣לֶּה ׀ אַלּוּפֵ֣י אֱד֗וֹם
These were the tribal chiefs of Edom;
לְמֹֽשְׁבֹתָם֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ אֲחֻזָּתָ֔ם
According to their habitations,
in the territory of their possessions,
ה֥וּא עֵשָׂ֖ו אֲבִ֥י אֱדֽוֹם׃ פ
That was Esau, the ancestor of Edom.
