Genesis 37

Genesis 37:1

Now Jacob dwelt in the land
of the sojournings of his father,

In the land of Cana’an;

Genesis 37:2

These are the histories of Jacob.

Joseph was a son of seventeen years,

He used to shepherd the flock, along with his brothers,

while he was a youth,—

with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah,
the wives of his father;

Then he brought an evil report of them to their father.

Genesis 37:3

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons,

for he was a son-of-old-age to him;

And he made him a fine multicoloured tunic.

Genesis 37:4

And his brothers took note that their father

had loved him more than all his brothers,

And they hated him;

And they were unable to speak to him with friendliness;

Genesis 37:5

And Joseph dreamt a dream,

and he told his brothers;

Then they began all the more to hate him:

Genesis 37:6

And he said to them:

“Please hear this dream that I have dreamt: —”

Genesis 37:7

“Now behold!
We were binding sheaves in the midst of the field;

And lo! My sheaf arose,

then moreover took its position;

And behold! Your sheaves, they were surrounding,

And they bowed themselves down to my sheaf.”

Genesis 37:8

Then his brothers said to him:
“Really! Will you be reigning over us!?

If indeed you shall rule over us!?”

So they became even more hateful of him,

On account of his dreams, and because of his reports;

Genesis 37:9

And he dreamt yet another dream,

Then he related it to his brothers;

And he said,
“Behold! I dreamt yet a dream,

And behold! The sun and the moon,
and eleven stars,

They were prostrating themselves  to me!”

Genesis 37:10

And so he recounted it to his father
and to his brothers.

But his father rebuked him,

and he said to him,
“What is this dream, that you have dreamt!?

Shall we indeed come, myself,
together with you mother (Bilhah) and your brothers,

to bow ourselves down to you, towards the earth!?”

Genesis 37:11

And his brothers were green with envy of him;

But his father had retained that word.

Genesis 37:12

And his brothers went away, —

In order to pasture their father’s flock (amongst other things!) at Shechem;

Genesis 37:13

And Israel said to Joseph:

“Are not your brothers shepherding at Shechem?

Go there, since I want to send you to them;”

So he said to him, “Here I am!”

Genesis 37:14

And he said to him,

“Please go check the welfare of your brothers

And the condition of the flock,

Then bring me back word”;

And so he sent him out from the vale of Hebron,
And he came to Shechem.

Genesis 37:15

And a certain man found him,
and there he was wandering in the field;

And the man asked him saying:
“What are you looking for?”

Genesis 37:16

And he said,
“I am seeking my brothers:

Please tell me, where they are shepherding;”

Genesis 37:17

And the man said,
“They have departed from here,

For I heard them saying,
‘Let us go to Dothan’ ”;

So Joseph went after his brothers,
and he found them at Dothan;

Genesis 37:18

And they saw him afar off;

And before he could draw near to them,

They colluded against him then,
to put him to death;

Genesis 37:19

And they said one to another:

“Behold, that lord of the dreams is about to make an entrance;”

Genesis 37:20

“And now — go and let us kill him,

And let us dispose of him in one of the pits,

and we shall say,
‘A ravenous beast has devoured him’;

“Then we shall see what shall become of his dreams!!”

Genesis 37:21

But Reuben heard,

And he delivered him from their hand;

Since he said,
“Let us not strike a person dead!”

Genesis 37:22

Furthermore Reuben said to them,

“You must not shed blood!

Cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness,

But you must not put forth a hand on him”:

( In order to remove him from their power,

To bring him back to his father).

Genesis 37:23

Now it happened,
when Joseph came to his brothers,

Then they made Joseph strip off his tunic,

The fine multicoloured tunic that was on him;

Genesis 37:24

And they seized him,
and threw him into the pit;

And the pit was empty,
there was no water in it;

Genesis 37:25

Then they sat down to consume food;

And they lifted up their eyes and they looked,

And behold! A travelling company of Ishmaelites,
coming from Gilead,

And their camels were carrying

Spice and balm and fragrant resin,—

They were proceeding to go down to Egypt;

Genesis 37:26

Then Judah said to his brothers:

“Whats the gain! —

If we should kill our brother,
and conceal his blood!?”

Genesis 37:27

“Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites,

So that our hand shall not be on him,

For he is our brother and our flesh.”;

And they listened to him.

Geneisis 37:28

And Midianite men passed by,
who were traders,

And they pulled and lifted Joseph up out of the pit,

And they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites,

at twenty shekels of silver;

Then they brought Joseph to Egypt.

Genesis 37:29

And Reuben returned to the pit,

And behold Joseph was not in the pit;

So he tore his clothes;

Genesis 37:30

And he went back to his brothers, and said:

” The boy is not,

And I, whither should I be heading!?”…

Genesis 37:31

And they took Joseph’s tunic,

And they slaughtered a goat buck,

Then dipped the tunic in the blood;

Genesis 37:32

And they sent the varicoloured tunic,

And brought it to their father,

And they said: “We found this:

Please check whether this is the tunic of your son, or not? ”;

Genesis 37:33

And he recognized it and said,
“The tunic of my son! —

A ravenous beast has devoured him! —

Joseph has for sure been torn to pieces!!”

Genesis 37:34

Then Jacob tore his outer clothing,

And he put sackcloth on his waist;

And he was in mourning over his son for many days.

Genesis 37:35

And all his sons arose together with all his daughters,
to comfort him,

But he refused to be consoled,

And he said,

“Verily I will go down to my son, mourning, to Sheol (Hades)!”;

And his father bewailed him.

Genesis 37:36

Now the Midianites,
they had sold him into Egypt, ……

To Potiphar, a eunuch-high official of Pharaoh,
the team-leader of the butcher-cooks.
