Genesis 39:1
וְיוֹסֵ֖ף הוּרַ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה
Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt;
וַיִּקְנֵ֡הוּ פּוֹטִיפַר֩ סְרִ֨יס פַּרְעֹ֜ה
And Potiphar, a eunuch-high official of Pharaoh,
had purchased him,
שַׂ֤ר הַטַּבָּחִים֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִצְרִ֔י
— Potiphar was an Egyptian man, the overseer of the butcher-cooks, —
מִיַּד֙ הַיִּשְׁמְעֵאלִ֔ים
from the hand of the Ishmaelites, —
אֲשֶׁ֥ר הוֹרִדֻ֖הוּ שָֽׁמָּה׃
They who had brought him down there;
Genesis 39:2
וַיְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף
But the LORD was with Joseph,
וַיְהִ֖י אִ֣ישׁ מַצְלִ֑יחַ
And He was making the man successful;
וַיְהִ֕י בְּבֵ֖ית אֲדֹנָ֥יו הַמִּצְרִֽי׃
And he was inside the house of his master the Egyptian;
Genesis 39:3
וַיַּ֣רְא אֲדֹנָ֔יו כִּ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אִתּ֑וֹ
And his master observed that the LORD was with him;
וְכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁר־ה֣וּא עֹשֶׂ֔ה
And everything that he was doing,
יְהוָ֖ה מַצְלִ֥יחַ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃
The LORD was making successful in his hand;
Genesis 39:4
וַיִּמְצָ֨א יוֹסֵ֥ף חֵ֛ן בְּעֵינָ֖יו וַיְשָׁ֣רֶת אֹת֑וֹ
And Joseph found favour in his eyes,
and he served him;
וַיַּפְקִדֵ֙הוּ֙ עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ
Then he appointed him governor over his house,
וְכָל־יֶשׁ־ל֖וֹ נָתַ֥ן בְּיָדֽוֹ׃
And all his property he had placed in his power;
Genesis 39:5
וַיְהִ֡י מֵאָז֩ הִפְקִ֨יד אֹת֜וֹ בְּבֵית֗וֹ
And it happened,
from the time he had appointed him governor, in his house,
וְעַל֙ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ל֔וֹ
and over all his property,
וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית הַמִּצְרִ֖י בִּגְלַ֣ל יוֹסֵ֑ף
that the LORD blessed the household of the Egyptian,
Because of Joseph;
וַיְהִ֞י בִּרְכַּ֤ת יְהוָה֙ בְּכָל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֶשׁ־ל֔וֹ
And it took place,
the blessing of the LORD was on everything that was his,
בַּבַּ֖יִת וּבַשָּׂדֶֽה׃
In the house and in the field;
Genesis 39:6
וַיַּעֲזֹ֣ב כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ֮ בְּיַד־יוֹסֵף֒
Thus he left all that was his, in the hand of Joseph:
וְלֹא־יָדַ֤ע אִתּוֹ֙ מְא֔וּמָה
And he had not concerned himself about anything,
כִּ֥י אִם־הַלֶּ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁר־ה֣וּא אוֹכֵ֑ל ס
Except the bread, that which he himself ate.
וַיְהִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף יְפֵה־תֹ֖אַר וִיפֵ֥ה מַרְאֶֽה׃
Now Joseph was of handsome form
and attractive appearance.
Genesis 39:7
וַיְהִ֗י אַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה
And it happened after these things, —
וַתִּשָּׂ֧א אֵֽשֶׁת־אֲדֹנָ֛יו אֶת־עֵינֶ֖יהָ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֑ף
that the wife of his master lifted her eyes towards Joseph,
וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שִׁכְבָ֥ה עִמִּֽי׃
And she said “Lie down together with me!”
Genesis 39:8
וַיְמָאֵ֓ן ׀ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֵ֣שֶׁת אֲדֹנָ֔יו
But he refused …
Then he said to the wife of his master:
הֵ֣ן אֲדֹנִ֔י לֹא־יָדַ֥ע אִתִּ֖י מַה־בַּבָּ֑יִת
“Look, my master, he is not concerned about
what is in the house with me;
וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יֶשׁ־ל֖וֹ נָתַ֥ן בְּיָדִֽי׃
And all his property, he has entrusted in my hand;”
Genesis 39:9
אֵינֶ֨נּוּ גָד֜וֹל בַּבַּ֣יִת הַזֶּה֮ מִמֶּנִּי֒
“There is none greater in this house than I,
וְלֹֽא־חָשַׂ֤ךְ מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ מְא֔וּמָה
And he has not held back a single thing from me,
כִּ֥י אִם־אוֹתָ֖ךְ בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתְּ־אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ
excepting you, in that you are his wife:
וְאֵ֨יךְ אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֜ה הָרָעָ֤ה הַגְּדֹלָה֙ הַזֹּ֔את
Then how could I perpetrate this great wickedness,
וְחָטָ֖אתִי לֵֽאלֹהִֽים׃
And sin against God!”
Genesis 39:10
וַיְהִ֕י כְּדַבְּרָ֥הּ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֖ף י֣וֹם ׀ י֑וֹם
And it took place, every day,
when she was soliciting Joseph,
וְלֹא־שָׁמַ֥ע אֵלֶ֛יהָ לִשְׁכַּ֥ב אֶצְלָ֖הּ
That he did not hearken to her,
to lie down beside her,
לִהְי֥וֹת עִמָּֽהּ׃
To become together with her;
Genesis 39:11
וַיְהִי֙ כְּהַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה
Now it happened around this time period,
וַיָּבֹ֥א הַבַּ֖יְתָה לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת מְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ
That he entered the house to do his work;
וְאֵ֨ין אִ֜ישׁ מֵאַנְשֵׁ֥י הַבַּ֛יִת שָׁ֖ם בַּבָּֽיִת׃
And there were none of the domestic servants
there in the house;
Genesis 39:12
וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂ֧הוּ בְּבִגְד֛וֹ לֵאמֹ֖ר שִׁכְבָ֣ה עִמִּ֑י
Then she laid hold of him by his robe, saying,
“Lie down together with me!”
וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב בִּגְדוֹ֙ בְּיָדָ֔הּ
But he left his robe in her hand,
וַיָּ֖נָס וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַחֽוּצָה׃
And he fled, and escaped outside;
Genesis 39:13
וַיְהִי֙ כִּרְאוֹתָ֔הּ כִּֽי־עָזַ֥ב בִּגְד֖וֹ בְּיָדָ֑הּ
And it happened when she took note
that he had left his robe in her hand
וַיָּ֖נָס הַחֽוּצָה׃
That he fled outside:
Genesis 39:14
וַתִּקְרָ֞א לְאַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵיתָ֗הּ
That she summoned the men of her household,
וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר
And she said to them: —
רְא֗וּ הֵ֥בִיא לָ֛נוּ אִ֥ישׁ עִבְרִ֖י
“Look, he has brought to us a Hebrew man,
לְצַ֣חֶק בָּ֑נוּ
in order to create mockery with us!
בָּ֤א אֵלַי֙ לִשְׁכַּ֣ב עִמִּ֔י
He came towards me in order to lie down with me,
וָאֶקְרָ֖א בְּק֥וֹל גָּדֽוֹל׃
But I cried out in a loud voice!”
Genesis 39:15
וַיְהִ֣י כְשָׁמְע֔וֹ כִּֽי־הֲרִימֹ֥תִי קוֹלִ֖י וָאֶקְרָ֑א
“And as soon as he heard that I raised my voice,
and cried out;
וַיַּעֲזֹ֤ב בִּגְדוֹ֙ אֶצְלִ֔י וַיָּ֖נָס וַיֵּצֵ֥א הַחֽוּצָה׃
Then he left his robe beside me,
and fled and went outside;”
Genesis 39:16
וַתַּנַּ֥ח בִּגְד֖וֹ אֶצְלָ֑הּ
And she let his robe lay beside her,
עַד־בּ֥וֹא אֲדֹנָ֖יו אֶל־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃
Until his master’s homecoming;
Genesis 39:17
וַתְּדַבֵּ֣ר אֵלָ֔יו כַּדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לֵאמֹ֑ר
Then she spoke to him, the like of these words, saying,
בָּֽא־אֵלַ֞י הָעֶ֧בֶד הָֽעִבְרִ֛י
“He came to me, the Hebrew slave,
אֲשֶׁר־הֵבֵ֥אתָ לָּ֖נוּ
He whom you brought in to us,
לְצַ֥חֶק בִּֽי׃
In order to create mockery with me;”
Genesis 39:18
וַיְהִ֕י כַּהֲרִימִ֥י קוֹלִ֖י וָאֶקְרָ֑א
“And it happened,
as soon as I lifted up my voice and cried out,
וַיַּעֲזֹ֥ב בִּגְד֛וֹ אֶצְלִ֖י וַיָּ֥נָס הַחֽוּצָה׃
That he left his garment beside me,
and he fled outside.”
Genesis 39:19
וַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ אֲדֹנָ֜יו אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֣י אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ
Now as his master was hearing the words of his wife,
אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבְּרָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר
Those which she had spoken to him, saying, —
כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה
— the like of these words —
לִ֖י עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ עָ֥שָׂה
“Your servant did to me!”
וַיִּ֖חַר אַפּֽוֹ׃
That his anger was kindled;
Genesis 39:20
וַיִּקַּח֩ אֲדֹנֵ֨י יוֹסֵ֜ף אֹת֗וֹ
Then the Master of Joseph took him,
וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית הַסֹּ֔הַר
and put him into the prison,
מְק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁר־אסורי אֲסִירֵ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֲסוּרִ֑ים
The place where the prisoners of the king were imprisoned,
וֽ͏ַיְהִי־שָׁ֖ם בְּבֵ֥ית הַסֹּֽהַר׃
And there he was, in that prison;
Genesis 39:21
וַיְהִ֤י יְהוָה֙ אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף
But the LORD was with Joseph,
וַיֵּ֥ט אֵלָ֖יו חָ֑סֶד
And He extended kindness towards him;
וַיִּתֵּ֣ן חִנּ֔וֹ בְּעֵינֵ֖י שַׂ֥ר בֵּית־הַסֹּֽהַר׃
And He granted him favour
in the eyes of the prison overseer;
Genesis 39:22
וַיִּתֵּ֞ן שַׂ֤ר בֵּית־הַסֹּ֙הַר֙ בְּיַד־יוֹסֵ֔ף
And the prison overseer put into Joseph’s control
אֵ֚ת כָּל־הָ֣אֲסִירִ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּבֵ֣ית הַסֹּ֑הַר
all the inmates who were in the prison;
וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר עֹשִׂים֙ שָׁ֔ם
And everything that they were doing there,
ה֖וּא הָיָ֥ה עֹשֶֽׂה׃
He had been bringing about;
Genesis 39:23
אֵ֣ין ׀
There was nothing
שַׂ֣ר בֵּית־הַסֹּהַ֗ר
The prison overseer
רֹאֶ֤ה אֶֽת־כָּל־מְא֙וּמָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ
was paying attention to
anything at all in Joseph’s control,
בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אִתּ֑וֹ
Because the LORD was with him;
וַֽאֲשֶׁר־ה֥וּא עֹשֶׂ֖ה יְהוָ֥ה מַצְלִֽיחַ׃ ס
And that which he was doing,
the LORD was making successful.
