Genesis 45:1
וְלֹֽא־יָכֹ֨ל יוֹסֵ֜ף לְהִתְאַפֵּ֗ק
Now Joseph was unable to restrain himself,
לְכֹ֤ל הַנִּצָּבִים֙ עָלָ֔יו
Before all those stationed in front of him,
וַיִּקְרָ֕א הוֹצִ֥יאוּ כָל־אִ֖ישׁ מֵעָלָ֑י
And he cried out,
“Have everyone go forth from me!”
וְלֹא־עָ֤מַד אִישׁ֙ אִתּ֔וֹ
And none stood by him,
בְּהִתְוַדַּ֥ע יוֹסֵ֖ף אֶל־אֶחָֽיו׃
When Joseph made himself known to his brothers;
Genesis 45:2
וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֶת־קֹל֖וֹ בִּבְכִ֑י
And he raised his voice in weeping,
וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם
And the Egyptians heard him,
וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע בֵּ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה׃
And the house of Pharaoh heard;
Genesis 45:3
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹסֵ֤ף אֶל־אֶחָיו֙ אֲנִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף
And Joseph said to his brothers,
“I am Joseph,
הַע֥וֹד אָבִ֖י חָ֑י
Is my father still living?”
וְלֹֽא־יָכְל֤וּ אֶחָיו֙ לַעֲנ֣וֹת אֹת֔וֹ
But his brothers were unable to respond to him,
כִּ֥י נִבְהֲל֖וּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃
Because they were dismayed by his presence;
Genesis 45:4
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹסֵ֧ף אֶל־אֶחָ֛יו גְּשׁוּ־נָ֥א אֵלַ֖י וַיִּגָּ֑שׁוּ
And Joseph said to his brothers:
“Approach me please!”
And so they approached;
וַיֹּ֗אמֶר
Then he said,
אֲנִי֙ יוֹסֵ֣ף אֲחִיכֶ֔ם
“It is I, Joseph your brother, —
אֲשֶׁר־מְכַרְתֶּ֥ם אֹתִ֖י מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃
I whom ye sold into Egypt!”
Genesis 45:5
וְעַתָּ֣ה ׀ אַל־תֵּעָ֣צְב֗וּ
“And now, do not grieve yourselves,
וְאַל־יִ֙חַר֙ בְּעֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם
Nor let anger be in your eyes,
כִּֽי־מְכַרְתֶּ֥ם אֹתִ֖י הֵ֑נָּה
Because ye sold me hither:
כִּ֣י לְמִֽחְיָ֔ה
Indeed for life preservation,
לָחַ֥נִי אֱלֹהִ֖ים לִפְנֵיכֶֽם׃
God has sent me before you;”
Genesis 45:6
כִּי־זֶ֛ה שְׁנָתַ֥יִם הָרָעָ֖ב בְּקֶ֣רֶב הָאָ֑רֶץ
“For this is year two of the famine
throughout the midst of the Earth;
וְעוֹד֙ חָמֵ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים
And there are yet five years,
אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵין־חָרִ֖ישׁ וְקָצִּֽיר׃
Where there will be no ploughing or harvesting;”
Genesis 45:7
וַיִּשְׁלָחֵ֤נִי אֱלֹהִים֙ לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם
“And so God sent me before you,
לָשׂ֥וּם לָכֶ֛ם שְׁאֵרִ֖ית בָּאָ֑רֶץ
To set up a remnant for you on the Earth;
וּלְהַחֲי֣וֹת לָכֶ֔ם לִפְלֵיטָ֖ה גְּדֹלָֽה׃
And to maintain life for you,
for a great deliverance;”
Genesis 45:8
וְעַתָּ֗ה לֹֽא־אַתֶּ֞ם שְׁלַחְתֶּ֤ם אֹתִי֙ הֵ֔נָּה
“And now, ye did not send me hither,
כִּ֖י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים
But the True God;
וַיְשִׂימֵ֨נִֽי לְאָ֜ב לְפַרְעֹ֗ה
And He has set me as father to Pharaoh,
וּלְאָדוֹן֙ לְכָל־בֵּית֔וֹ
And as lord to all his house,
וּמֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃
And ruler over all the land of Egypt.”
Genesis 45:9
מַהֲרוּ֮ וַעֲל֣וּ אֶל־אָבִי֒
“Act quickly, and go ye up to my father,
וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣ם אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ בִּנְךָ֣ יוֹסֵ֔ף
and say ye to him:
‘Thus saith your son Joseph, —
שָׂמַ֧נִי אֱלֹהִ֛ים לְאָד֖וֹן לְכָל־מִצְרָ֑יִם
“God hath appointed me as lord of all Egypt;
רְדָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י אַֽל־תַּעֲמֹֽד׃
Come down to me, do not delay!” ’ ”
Genesis 45:10
וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֣ בְאֶֽרֶץ־גֹּ֗שֶׁן וְהָיִ֤יתָ קָרוֹב֙ אֵלַ֔י
“ ‘And you will dwell in the Land of Goshen,
and will be close to me,
אַתָּ֕ה וּבָנֶ֖יךָ וּבְנֵ֣י בָנֶ֑יךָ
You and your sons, and your sons’ sons; —
וְצֹאנְךָ֥ וּבְקָרְךָ֖ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ׃
Together with your flocks and your herds,
and everything that is yours;” ‘
Genesis 45:11
וְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֤י אֹֽתְךָ֙ שָׁ֔ם
“And I will sustain you there,
כִּי־ע֛וֹד חָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים רָעָ֑ב
For there are yet five years of famine:
פֶּן־תִּוָּרֵ֛שׁ אַתָּ֥ה וּבֵֽיתְךָ֖
Lest you and your house should become destitute,
וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ׃
Along with all that you own!”
Genesis 45:12
וְהִנֵּ֤ה עֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ רֹא֔וֹת
“Now behold, your eyes have been observing,
וְעֵינֵ֖י אָחִ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ין
Together with the eyes of my brother Benjamin,
כִּי־פִ֖י הַֽמְדַבֵּ֥ר אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃
That my own mouth is
the one that was speaking to you:”
Genesis 45:13
וְהִגַּדְתֶּ֣ם לְאָבִ֗י אֶת־כָּל־כְּבוֹדִי֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם
“Now ye shall report to my father,
of all my riches and importance in Egypt,
וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר רְאִיתֶ֑ם
And all that you have seen:
וּמִֽהַרְתֶּ֛ם וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־אָבִ֖י הֵֽנָּה׃
And act quickly and bring my father hither!”
Genesis 45:14
וַיִּפֹּ֛ל עַל־צַוְּארֵ֥י בִנְיָמִֽן־אָחִ֖יו וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ
Then he fell upon the neck
of Benjamin his brother, and he wept,
וּבִנְיָמִ֔ן בָּכָ֖ה עַל־צַוָּארָֽיו׃
And Benjamin, he wept upon his neck;
Genesis 45:15
וַיְנַשֵּׁ֥ק לְכָל־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֵּ֣בְךְּ עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם
Then he kissed all his brothers,
and he wept over them;
וְאַ֣חֲרֵי כֵ֔ן דִּבְּר֥וּ אֶחָ֖יו אִתּֽוֹ׃ס
Also afterwards,
his brothers spoke with him.
Genesis 45:16
וְהַקֹּ֣ל נִשְׁמַ֗ע בֵּ֤ית פַּרְעֹה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר
Now the news was heard
by the house of Pharaoh, saying:
בָּ֖אוּ אֲחֵ֣י יוֹסֵ֑ף
“The brothers of Joseph have come!”
וַיִּיטַב֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וּבְעֵינֵ֖י עֲבָדָֽיו׃
And it was pleasing in the eyes of Pharaoh,
and in the eyes of his servants.
Genesis 45:17
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף
And Pharaoh said to Joseph, —
אֱמֹ֥ר אֶל־אַחֶ֖יךָ זֹ֣את עֲשׂ֑וּ
“Say to your brothers, ‘Do this:
טַֽעֲנוּ֙ אֶת־בְּעִ֣ירְכֶ֔ם
Load your pack animals,
וּלְכוּ־בֹ֖אוּ אַ֥רְצָה כְּנָֽעַן׃
Then proceed and go
to the land of Canaan!’ ”
Genesis 45:18
וּקְח֧וּ אֶת־אֲבִיכֶ֛ם וְאֶת־בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם
“ ‘And fetch your father and your households,
וּבֹ֣אוּ אֵלָ֑י
And come to me;
וְאֶתְּנָ֣ה לָכֶ֗ם אֶת־טוּב֙ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם
and I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, —
וְאִכְל֖וּ אֶת־חֵ֥לֶב הָאָֽרֶץ׃
Then eat ye the fat of the land!’ ”
Genesis 45:19
וְאַתָּ֥ה צֻוֵּ֖יתָה
“And you (Joseph) are commanded:
זֹ֣את עֲשׂ֑וּ
‘Do ye this:
קְחוּ־לָכֶם֩ מֵאֶ֨רֶץ מִצְרַ֜יִם עֲגָל֗וֹת
Take wagons from the land of Egypt for yourselves,
לְטַפְּכֶם֙ וְלִנְשֵׁיכֶ֔ם
For your little ones and for your wives,
וּנְשָׂאתֶ֥ם אֶת־אֲבִיכֶ֖ם וּבָאתֶֽם׃
Then take ye up your father, and come!’ ”
Genesis 45:20
וְעֵ֣ינְכֶ֔ם אַל־תָּחֹ֖ס עַל־כְּלֵיכֶ֑ם
“ ‘And do not let your eye be troubled
regarding your things,
כִּי־ט֛וּב כָּל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם
Because the goodness of the whole land of Egypt,
לָכֶ֥ם הֽוּא׃
It is yours!’ ”
Genesis 45:21
וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵן֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
And thus did the sons of Israel,
וַיִּתֵּ֨ן לָהֶ֥ם יוֹסֵ֛ף עֲגָל֖וֹת
And Joseph gave them wagons,
עַל־פִּ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה
by the declaration of Pharaoh;
וַיִּתֵּ֥ן לָהֶ֛ם צֵדָ֖ה לַדָּֽרֶךְ׃
And he gave them provision for the journey;
Genesis 45:22
לְכֻלָּ֥ם נָתַ֛ן לָאִ֖ישׁ חֲלִפ֣וֹת שְׂמָלֹ֑ת
To all of them severally he had given
a change of clothing;
וּלְבִנְיָמִ֤ן נָתַן֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת כֶּ֔סֶף
But to Benjamin he had given
three hundred pieces of silver,
וְחָמֵ֖שׁ חֲלִפֹ֥ת שְׂמָלֹֽת׃
And five changes of clothing;
Genesis 45:23
וּלְאָבִ֞יו שָׁלַ֤ח כְּזֹאת֙ עֲשָׂרָ֣ה חֲמֹרִ֔ים
Now for his father he had dispatched as follows:
Ten male donkeys,
נֹשְׂאִ֖ים מִטּ֣וּב מִצְרָ֑יִם
Transporting such from the good things of Egypt;
וְעֶ֣שֶׂר אֲתֹנֹ֡ת נֹֽ֠שְׂאֹת
Also ten female donkeys that were carrying
בָּ֣ר וָלֶ֧חֶם וּמָז֛וֹן לְאָבִ֖יו לַדָּֽרֶךְ׃
threshed grain together with bread and provision
for the journey;
Genesis 45:24
וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־אֶחָ֖יו וַיֵּלֵ֑כוּ
And he sent off his brothers,
and they proceeded;
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אַֽל־תִּרְגְּז֖וּ בַּדָּֽרֶךְ׃
But he said to them,
“Ye must not quarrel on the way!”
Genesis 45:25
וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם
And they went up out of the land of Egypt,
וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן
And they came to the land of Canaan,
אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֖ב אֲבִיהֶֽם׃
To Jacob their father;
Genesis 45:26
וַיַּגִּ֨דוּ ל֜וֹ לֵאמֹ֗ר
And they told him, saying:
ע֚וֹד יוֹסֵ֣ף חַ֔י
“Joseph is still living,
וְכִֽי־ה֥וּא מֹשֵׁ֖ל בְּכָל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם
And yea he is ruler over
the whole land of Egypt!”
וַיָּ֣פָג לִבּ֔וֹ כִּ֥י לֹא־הֶאֱמִ֖ין לָהֶֽם׃
Then his heart fainted,
because he could not believe them;
Genesis 45:27
וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו
And they spoke to him, —
אֵ֣ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֤י יוֹסֵף֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם
All the words of Joseph
that he had spoken to them;
וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת־הָ֣עֲגָל֔וֹת
And he observed the wagons,
אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח יוֹסֵ֖ף לָשֵׂ֣את אֹת֑וֹ
That Joseph had sent to transport him; —
וַתְּחִ֕י ר֖וּחַ יַעֲקֹ֥ב אֲבִיהֶֽם׃
Then the spirit of Jacob their father revived;
Genesis 45:28
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל
And Israel said:
רַ֛ב עוֹד־יוֹסֵ֥ף בְּנִ֖י חָ֑י
“It means much,
that Joseph my son is still living!
אֵֽלְכָ֥ה וְאֶרְאֶ֖נּוּ בְּטֶ֥רֶם אָמֽוּת׃ס
I want to go and see him, before I die!”
