Genesis 46:1
וַיִּסַּ֤ע יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ
And Israel set out
together with all that he had,
וַיָּבֹ֖א בְּאֵ֣רָה שָּׁ֑בַע
And he came to Beer Sheva (Well of the Oath);
וַיִּזְבַּ֣ח זְבָחִ֔ים
And he offered sacrifices
לֵאלֹהֵ֖י אָבִ֥יו יִצְחָֽק׃
To the God of his father Isaac;
Genesis 46:2
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀
Then God said
לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּמַרְאֹ֣ת הַלַּ֔יְלָה
to Israel by Night Vision, —
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֣ב ׀ יַעֲקֹ֑ב
and He said, “Jacob!, Jacob!”;
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃
and he said, “Here I am”;
Genesis 46:3
וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֥י הָאֵ֖ל אֱלֹהֵ֣י אָבִ֑יךָ
And He said,
“I Am the True God, the God of your father,
אַל־תִּירָא֙ מֵרְדָ֣ה מִצְרַ֔יְמָה
Do not be afraid of going down to Egypt,
כִּֽי־לְג֥וֹי גָּד֖וֹל אֲשִֽׂימְךָ֥ שָֽׁם׃
For there I shall make you into a great nation!”
Genesis 46:4
אָנֹכִ֗י אֵרֵ֤ד עִמְּךָ֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה
“I Myself will go down with you to Egypt,
וְאָנֹכִ֖י אַֽעַלְךָ֣ גַם־עָלֹ֑ה
And I Myself will also most certainly
lead you up;
וְיוֹסֵ֕ף יָשִׁ֥ית יָד֖וֹ עַל־עֵינֶֽיךָ׃
Now Joseph,
he shall place his hand over your eyes”;
Genesis 46:5
וַיָּ֥קָם יַעֲקֹ֖ב מִבְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע
And Jacob arose from Be’er Sheva;
וַיִּשְׂא֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־יַעֲקֹ֣ב אֲבִיהֶ֗ם
And the sons of Israel lifted Jacob their father,
וְאֶת־טַפָּם֙ וְאֶת־נְשֵׁיהֶ֔ם בָּעֲגָל֕וֹת
Together with their little ones and their wives
onto the carts,
אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח פַּרְעֹ֖ה לָשֵׂ֥את אֹתֽוֹ׃
Those that Pharaoh had sent to transport them;
Genesis 46:6
וַיִּקְח֣וּ אֶת־מִקְנֵיהֶ֗ם
And they took their livestock,
וְאֶת־רְכוּשָׁם֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר רָֽכְשׁוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן
And the substance they had acquired
in the land of Canaan,
וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ מִצְרָ֑יְמָה
And they came to Egypt;
יַעֲקֹ֖ב וְכָל־זַרְע֥וֹ אִתּֽוֹ׃
Jacob, and all his seed with him:
Genesis 46:7
בָּנָ֞יו וּבְנֵ֤י בָנָיו֙ אִתּ֔וֹ
His sons, and his grandsons with him,
בְּנֹתָ֛יו וּבְנ֥וֹת בָּנָ֖יו וְכָל־זַרְע֑וֹ
His daughters and the daughters of his sons,
and all of his seed,
הֵבִ֥יא אִתּ֖וֹ מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃ ס
He brought with him, into Egypt.
Genesis 46:8
וְאֵ֨לֶּה שְׁמ֧וֹת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל
Now these are the names of the sons of Israel,
הַבָּאִ֥ים מִצְרַ֖יְמָה יַעֲקֹ֣ב וּבָנָ֑יו
They who came to Egypt,
Jacob and his sons:
בְּכֹ֥ר יַעֲקֹ֖ב רְאוּבֵֽן׃
Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn;
Genesis 46:9
וּבְנֵ֖י רְאוּבֵ֑ן
And the sons of Reuben:
חֲנ֥וֹךְ וּפַלּ֖וּא
Hanoch (Dedicated/Instructed) and Pallu (Distinguished)
וְחֶצְר֥וֹן וְכַרְמִֽי׃
And Hezron (Enclosed/Protected) and Carmi (Vine-dresser/My Vineyard)
Genesis 46:10
וּבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְע֗וֹן
And the sons of Simeon, —
יְמוּאֵ֧ל וְיָמִ֛ין וְאֹ֖הַד
Jemuel (Day of God) and Jamin (Right Hand)
and Ohad (Joining Together),
וְיָכִ֣ין וְצֹ֑חַר
And Jaychin (He shall establish)and Zohar (Shining);
וְשָׁא֖וּל בֶּן־הַֽכְּנַעֲנִֽית׃
And Shaul (Asked for), the son of the Canaanitess;
Genesis 46:11
וּבְנֵ֖י לֵוִ֑י
And the sons of Levi:
גֵּרְשׁ֕וֹן
Gershon (Dismissal),
קְהָ֖ת
Kohath (Assembly),
וּמְרָרִֽי׃
Merari (Bitter/Sad);
Genesis 46:12
וּבְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה
And the sons of Judah:ֵ
ע֧ר וְאוֹנָ֛ן וְשֵׁלָ֖ה וָפֶ֣רֶץ וָזָ֑רַח
Er (aroused/excited) and Onan (nothingness),
And Shelah (petition),
And Perez (a breaking forth) and Zerah (a rising);
וַיָּ֨מָת עֵ֤ר וְאוֹנָן֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן
(Now Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan)
וַיִּהְי֥וּ בְנֵי־פֶ֖רֶץ חֶצְר֥וֹן וְחָמֽוּל׃
And the sons or Perez, they were
Hezron (enclosed/protected) and Hamul (spared);
Genesis 46:13
וּבְנֵ֖י יִשָׂשכָ֑ר
And the sons of Issachar:
תּוֹלָ֥ע וּפֻוָּ֖ה
Tola (Scarlet) and Phuva,
וְי֥וֹב וְשִׁמְרֽוֹן׃
and Jov and Shimron (Watchmount);
Genesis 46:14
וּבְנֵ֖י זְבוּלֻ֑ן
And the sons of Zebulun:
סֶ֥רֶד וְאֵל֖וֹן
Sered (Transporter) and Elon (Divine Tree/Terebinth),
וְיַחְלְאֵֽל׃
and Jahleel (Waiting/Hoping in God).
Genesis 46:15
אֵ֣לֶּה ׀ בְּנֵ֣י לֵאָ֗ה
These, the sons of Leah,
אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָֽלְדָ֤ה לְיַעֲקֹב֙ בְּפַדַּ֣ן אֲרָ֔ם
They whom she bore to Jacob in Padan Aram;
וְאֵ֖ת דִּינָ֣ה בִתּ֑וֹ
And his daughter Dinah (Judge);
כָּל־נֶ֧פֶשׁ בָּנָ֛יו וּבְנוֹתָ֖יו
Every soul-unit of his sons
and his daughters-in-law:
שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וְשָׁלֹֽשׁ׃
Genesis 46:16
וּבְנֵ֣י גָ֔ד
And the sons of Gad:
צִפְי֥וֹן וְחַגִּ֖י
Ziphion (Innocent Expectation) and Haggi (Festal),
שׁוּנִ֣י וְאֶצְבֹּ֑ן
Shuni (Quiet) and Ezbon;
עֵרִ֥י וַֽאֲרוֹדִ֖י
Eri (‘Awakeman’) and Arodi,
וְאַרְאֵלִֽי׃
And Areli (God’s Lion);
Genesis 46:17
וּבְנֵ֣י אָשֵׁ֗ר
And the offspring of Asher:
יִמְנָ֧ה וְיִשְׁוָ֛ה וְיִשְׁוִ֥י וּבְרִיעָ֖ה
Jimnah (The LORD has Appointed)
and Ishvah (He will Make Good)
and Ishvi (He will Requite Me)
and Beriah (In Calamity),
וְשֶׂ֣רַח אֲחֹתָ֑ם
And Serah (Prosperity) their sister;
וּבְנֵ֣י בְרִיעָ֔ה חֶ֖בֶר וּמַלְכִּיאֵֽל׃
And the sons of Beriah,
Heber (Companion) and MalchiEl (My King is God);
Genesis 46:18
אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י זִלְפָּ֔ה
These, the offspring of Zilpah,
אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן לָבָ֖ן לְלֵאָ֣ה בִתּ֑וֹ
She whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah;
וַתֵּ֤לֶד אֶת־אֵ֙לֶּה֙ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב
And she bore these to Jacob,
שֵׁ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה נָֽפֶשׁ׃
Sixteen soul-units:
Genesis 46:19
בְּנֵ֤י רָחֵל֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב
The sons of Rachel, the wife of Jacob:
יוֹסֵ֖ף וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃
Joseph and Benjamin;
Genesis 46:20
וַיִּוָּלֵ֣ד לְיוֹסֵף֮ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַיִם֒
Now born to Joseph, in the land of Egypt,
אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָֽלְדָה־לּוֹ֙ אָֽסְנַ֔ת
Whom Asenath
(‘belonging to the goddess Neith – goddess of wisdom’)
bore to him, —
בַּת־פּ֥וֹטִי פֶ֖רַע כֹּהֵ֣ן אֹ֑ן
The daughter of Poti Phera (‘given of Ra’ – the sun god),
The priest of On (Heliopolis – ‘City of the Sun’):
אֶת־מְנַשֶּׁ֖ה וְאֶת־אֶפְרָֽיִם׃
Manasseh (“Causing to Forget”),
and Ephraim (Doubly Fruitful);
Genesis 46:21
וּבְנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֗ן בֶּ֤לַע וָבֶ֙כֶר֙ וְאַשְׁבֵּ֔ל
And the sons of Benjamin,
Bela (Engulfer/Devourer) and Becher (Deemed Firstborn),
and Ashbel (Fire of Baal),
גֵּרָ֥א וְנַעֲמָ֖ן אֵחִ֣י וָרֹ֑אשׁ
Gera and Naaman (Pleasant),
Ehi (My Brother) and Rosh (Leader/Chief);
מֻפִּ֥ים וְחֻפִּ֖ים וָאָֽרְדְּ׃
Muppim (Blown Away) and Huppim (Coverings),
and Ard (Fugitive/Hunch-backed);
Genesis 46:22
אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י רָחֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻלַּ֖ד לְיַעֲקֹ֑ב
These — the sons of Rachel,
who were born to Jacob;
כָּל־נֶ֖פֶשׁ אַרְבָּעָ֥ה עָשָֽׂר׃
Every soul unit totalling fourteen;
Genesis 46:23
וּבְנֵי־דָ֖ן
And the sons of Dan (Judge),
חֻשִֽׁים׃
Hushim (Hastening);
Genesis 46:24
וּבְנֵ֖י נַפְתָּלִ֑י
Now the sons of Naphtali (My Wrestling):
יַחְצְאֵ֥ל וְגוּנִ֖י
Jahziel (God Apportions)
and Guni (Coloured/Dyed),
וְיֵ֥צֶר וְשִׁלֵּֽם׃
And Jezer (Created Human Being)
and Shillem (Retribution/Compensation);
Genesis 46:25
אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י בִלְהָ֔ה
These, the sons of Bilhah,
אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן לָבָ֖ן לְרָחֵ֣ל בִּתּ֑וֹ
She whom Laban gave
to his daughter Rachel;
וַתֵּ֧לֶד אֶת־אֵ֛לֶּה לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב
And she bore these to Jacob:
כָּל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ שִׁבְעָֽה׃
Every soul-unit totalling seven.
Genesis 46:26
כָּל־הַ֠נֶּפֶשׁ
All the individuals,
הַבָּאָ֨ה לְיַעֲקֹ֤ב מִצְרַ֙יְמָה֙ יֹצְאֵ֣י יְרֵכ֔וֹ
Them belonging to Jacob coming to Egypt,
descended from his loins,
מִלְּבַ֖ד נְשֵׁ֣י בְנֵי־יַעֲקֹ֑ב
Besides the wives of Jacob’s sons,
כָּל־נֶ֖פֶשׁ שִׁשִּׁ֥ים וָשֵֽׁשׁ׃
Every soul totalling sixty six;
Genesis 46:27
וּבְנֵ֥י יוֹסֵ֛ף
And the sons of Joseph,
אֲשֶׁר־יֻלַּד־ל֥וֹ בְמִצְרַ֖יִם נֶ֣פֶשׁ שְׁנָ֑יִם
Who were born to him in Egypt, were two individuals.
כָּל־הַנֶּ֧פֶשׁ לְבֵֽית־יַעֲקֹ֛ב
Every soul belonging to the house of Jacob,
הַבָּ֥אָה מִצְרַ֖יְמָה שִׁבְעִֽים׃ פ
Having come to Egypt, totalled seventy.
Genesis 46:28
וְאֶת־יְהוּדָ֞ה שָׁלַ֤ח לְפָנָיו֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף
Now he had sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph,
לְהוֹרֹ֥ת לְפָנָ֖יו גֹּ֑שְׁנָה
In order to point out Goshen before him;
וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אַ֥רְצָה גֹּֽשֶׁן׃
Thus they came into the territory of Goshen.
Genesis 46:29
וַיֶּאְסֹ֤ר יוֹסֵף֙ מֶרְכַּבְתּ֔וֹ
And Joseph prepared his chariot,
וַיַּ֛עַל לִקְרַֽאת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל אָבִ֖יו גֹּ֑שְׁנָה
And went up to Goshen to meet Israel his father;
וַיֵּרָ֣א אֵלָ֗יו וַיִּפֹּל֙ עַל־צַוָּארָ֔יו
And he presented himself to him
and fell upon his neck,
וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ עַל־צַוָּארָ֖יו עֽוֹד׃
And he wept upon his neck continuously;
Genesis 46:30
וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־יוֹסֵ֖ף
Then Israel said to Joseph,
אָמ֣וּתָה הַפָּ֑עַם
“I will happily die now,
אַחֲרֵי֙ רְאוֹתִ֣י אֶת־פָּנֶ֔יךָ
Since I have seen your face,
כִּ֥י עוֹדְךָ֖ חָֽי׃
Because you are still alive!”
Genesis 46:31
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹסֵ֤ף אֶל־אֶחָיו֙
And Joseph said to his brothers,
וְאֶל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יו
and to his father’s household,
אֶעֱלֶ֖ה וְאַגִּ֣ידָה לְפַרְעֹ֑ה
“I will go up and I will inform Pharaoh;
וְאֹֽמְרָ֣ה אֵלָ֔יו
And I will say to him:
אַחַ֧י וּבֵית־אָבִ֛י
‘My brothers and my father’s household,
אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּאֶֽרֶץ־כְּנַ֖עַן
Who were in the land of Canaan,
בָּ֥אוּ אֵלָֽי׃
They have come to me;’ ”
Genesis 46:32
וְהָאֲנָשִׁים֙ רֹ֣עֵי צֹ֔אן
‘And the men are shepherding flocks,
כִּֽי־אַנְשֵׁ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה הָי֑וּ
Because the men are herdsmen;
וְצֹאנָ֧ם וּבְקָרָ֛ם
And their flocks and their herds,
וְכָל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָהֶ֖ם הֵבִֽיאוּ׃
and everything that is theirs, they have brought in;’ ”
Genesis 46:33
וְהָיָ֕ה כִּֽי־יִקְרָ֥א לָכֶ֖ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה
“Now it shall take place that Pharaoh will summon you;
וְאָמַ֖ר מַה־מַּעֲשֵׂיכֶֽם׃
And he will say ‘what is your work?’ ”
Genesis 46:34
ַואֲמַרְתֶּ֗ם
“Then shall ye say,
אַנְשֵׁ֨י מִקְנֶ֜ה הָי֤וּ עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙
‘Your servants have been herdsmen,
מִנְּעוּרֵ֣ינוּ וְעַד־עַ֔תָּה
From our youth even until now,
גַּם־אֲנַ֖חְנוּ גַּם־אֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ
Both we and our fathers;’
בַּעֲב֗וּר תֵּשְׁבוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גֹּ֔שֶׁן
So that ye can remain in the territory of Goshen,
כִּֽי־תוֹעֲבַ֥ת מִצְרַ֖יִם כָּל־רֹ֥עֵה צֹֽאן׃
Because anyone who shepherds a flock is regarded as polluted and an abhorrence by Egyptians.”
