Genesis 47

Genesis 47:1

And Joseph went and reported to Pharaoh,

And said:

“My father and my brothers,
and their flocks and their herds,
together with all that they have,

They came from the land of Canaan,

And behold they are in the territory of Goshen;”

Genesis 47:2

Now he had selected five men from all his brothers,

And he presented them before Pharaoh;

Genesis 47:3

And Pharaoh said to his brothers:
“What is your work?”

And they said to Pharaoh:
“Your servants do flock shepherding,

Both we and our fathers;”

Genesis 47:4

Then they said to Pharaoh:
“We have come to dwell in the land for a time,

Since there wasn’t any pasture for your servants’ flock,

Because the famine is severe in the land of Canaan;

And now in these circumstances,
Please allow your servants to stay in the territory of Goshen.

Genesis 47:5

And Pharaoh said
to Joseph, saying:

“Your father and your brothers,
they have come to you;”

Genesis 47:6

“The land of Egypt, it is before you!

In the best part of the land,

settle your father and your brothers;

Let them dwell in the territory of Goshen;

And if you discern there are among them competent men,

Then appoint them overseers of livestock, —
over what is mine.”

Genesis 47:7

And Joseph brought in Jacob his father,

And presented him before Pharaoh;

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh;

Genesis 47:8

And Pharaoh said to Jacob:

“How many are the days, the years of your life?”

Genesis 47:9

And Jacob said to Pharaoh:

“The days, the years of my sojournings, —

One hundred and thirty years;

Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life,

And they have not attained to the days,
the years of the lives of my fathers,

In the days of their sojournings;”

Genesis 47:10

And Jacob blessed Pharaoh;

And he came out from Pharaoh’s presence.

Genesis 47:11

And Joseph resettled his father and his brothers,

And gave them property in the land of Egypt,

In the best part of the land, in the territory of Rameses,

As Pharaoh had commanded;

Genesis 47:12

And Joseph sustained his father and his brothers,

And the whole his father’s household;

With bread, in accordance with
the childrens’ portion;

Genesis 47:13

Now there was no bread in all the land,

For the famine was extremely severe;

And the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan wasted away,

Due to the famine;

Genesis 47:14

And Joseph collected

All the money/silver

What was found in the land of Egypt,
And in the land of Canaan,

In exchange for the grain that they were purchasing;

And Joseph brought the money/silver
Into the house of Pharaoh;

Genesis 47:15

And the money of the land of Egypt,
and the land of Canaan was consumed,

And all the Egyptians came to Joseph saying:

“Give us bread!…Now why must we die,
in front of you,

Because money is no more!”

Genesis 47:16

And Joseph said:
“Give now your livestock,

Then I can give you bread,
in exchange for your livestock,

Even though money is no more.”

Genesis 47:17

And they brought their livestock property to Joseph,

And Joseph gave them bread in exchange for the horses,

And in exchange for the sheep and goat livestock,
and for the cattle livestock, and for the donkeys;

Thus he provided them with the food in exchange for all their livestock,

For that year;

Genesis 47:18

When that year expired,

Then they went to him in the second year,

And they said to him:
“We cannot conceal from my lord,

That truly the money has gone,

And the animal livestock, to my lord.

Nothing remains before my lord,

Apart from our body and our soil”;

Genesis 47:19

For what reason should we perish before your eyes,

Both we and our land?

Purchase us and our land in exchange for bread;

Then we and our land will become slaves to Pharaoh,

And give us seed, that we may remain alive and not die,

And the land shall not become desolate.”

Genesis 47:20

And Joseph purchased all the arable land for Pharaoh,

Because the Egyptians, every man, had sold his field;

For the famine had grown strong upon them;

And so the land became Pharaoh’s.

Genesis 47:21

Now the general population,
he had transferred into the cities; —

From one end of Egypt’s territory,
even to the other end of it;

Genesis 47:22

Only the priests’ land he had not purchased;

Because an appointed portion for the priests,
came from Pharaoh,

Thus they ate their appointed portion,
That which Pharaoh had given them,

Therefore they had not sold their land.

Genesis 47:23

And Joseph said to the people:

“Behold I have bought you this day,

and your land, for Pharaoh;

Look here is seed for you!
And you will again sow the land”

Genesis 47:24

And it shall take place at the harvests,
that you shall give a fifth of them to Pharaoh;

Now the four parts (80%),

It shall be yours as seed for the field
and for you to eat,

And for those in your households,
And as food to eat for your little ones;

Genesis 47:25

And they said:

“You have kept us alive!

Let us find favor in the eyes of my lord,

And we will be bondmen to Pharaoh!”

Genesis 47:26

And so Joseph enacted it,

As a statute unto this very day,
Over the land of Egypt,

“To Pharaoh belongs the fifth”;

But the land of the priests, them alone,

Did not become Pharaoh’s.

Genesis 47:27

And so Israel settled in the land of Egypt,

In the territory of Goshen;

And they were caught up in it,

But they became fruitful and multiplied exceedingly.

Genesis 47:28

Now Jacob lived in the land of Egypt

17 years,

And it came to pass the days of Jacob,
the years of his lifespan,

were 147 years.

Genesis 47:29

Now when the days for Israel to die approached,

Then he called his son Joseph,

And he said to him, –
“I pray thee if I have found grace in thine eyes,

Place now your hand under my covenantal loin,

So that you shall do with me a kindness and loyalty:

I pray thee do not bury me in Egypt;”

Genesis 47:30

“And that I will repose with my fathers,
and so carry me out of Egypt,

Then bury me in their burial place.”

And he said, “I shall do according to your word.”

Genesis 47:31

And he said,
“Pledge yourself under oath to me,”
And so he pledged himself to him;

Then Israel bowed himself in reverence
on the head of the bed.
