Genesis 50:1
Then Joseph fell upon the face of his father;
And he wept over him,
and he kissed him;
Genesis 50:2
Then Joseph commissioned his servants,
the physicians,
to embalm his father;
Thus the physicians embalmed Israel;
Genesis 50:3
And forty days were fulfilled for him,
Because thus would be completed
the days of the embalmment;
And Egypt wept for him, for seventy days.
Genesis 50:4
When the days of weeping for him were over,
Then Joseph spoke,
To the household of Pharaoh, saying:
If I have now found favour in your eyes,
Please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying:”
Genesis 50:5
“My father, he made me pledge absolutely by saying:
‘Behold I am about to die:
In my sepulchre,
That which I hollowed out for myself in the land of Canaan,
There you must inter me.’ ”
“And now,
Let me go up please that I may inter my father,
and I will come back.”
Genesis 50:6
And Pharaoh said:
“Go up then inter your father,
Seeing that he made you pledge absolutely.”
Genesis 50:7
So Joseph went up, to inter his father;
And they went up with him, —
All of Pharaoh’s servants,
the elders of his house,
And so all the elders of the land of Egypt;
Genesis 50:8
Together with all of the house of Joseph,
and his brothers and the house of his father;
Only their little ones,
and their flocks and their herds,
They had left behind,
in the land of Goshen;
Genesis 50:9
And went up along with him,
both war chariotry together with charioteer;
And so the host was exceedingly numerous;
Genesis 50:10
And they came as far as
the open space of the buckthorn,
That which is at the Crossing of the Jordan,
And there they commenced the lament,
A very great and solemn wailing;
And he made for his father seven days of lamentation;
Genesis 50:11
And the inhabitant of the Canaanite land
took note of the mourning,
At the open space of the buckthorn,
and they said,
“This is heavy mourning with reference to Egypt;”
On this basis he had named it ‘Abel Mizraim’
(The Mourning of Egypt),
Which is at the Crossing of the Jordan;
Genesis 50:12
And so his sons did for him,
Just so,
according as he had commanded them;
Genesis 50:13
And his sons carried him to the land of Canaan,
And they interred him,
In the cave of the field of Machpelah (the Doubling);
The field which Abraham had purchased,
for the burial place possession,
from Ephron the Hittite, —
Facing Mamre (Hebron).
Genesis 50:14
And Joseph returned to Egypt,
he and his brothers,
And all those who went up with him
in order to inter his father:
After he interred his father;
Genesis 50:15
Now the brothers of Joseph took note
that their father was dead,
and they thought,
“Oh if Joseph bears us enmity,
Then he will definitely give back to us
All the evil,
That which we did to him;”
Genesis 50:16
Then they commissioned,
concerning Joseph,
in stating:
“Your father commanded,
before his death, saying: —”
Genesis 50:17
“Thus shall ye say to Joseph:
‘Ah please, please forgive
The transgression of your brothers
and their wrongful deed,
that malignity they dealt to you,
So now please forgive for that transgression
of the servants of the God of your father;’ ”
And Joseph wept when they spoke to him;
Genesis 50:18
And moreover his brothers went,
and they fell down before him;
And they said:
“Behold we are yours,
for slaves!”
Genesis 50:19
But Joseph said to them,
“Ye must not fear;
For am I in place of God!”
Genesis 50:20
“Now ye, ye had devised evil against me;
God had planned it into good,
In order to be creating
the like of this day,
To be keeping alive a numerous people;”
Genesis 50:21
“And so now, ye must not fear, —
I myself will sustain you,
together with your little ones.”
And he comforted them,
and he spoke to their hearts.
Genesis 50:22
And Joseph dwelt in Egypt,
He and the house of his father;
And Joseph lived one hundred and ten years;
Genesis 50:23
So Joseph saw of Ephraim,
Sons of a third generation;
In addition, the sons of Machir (meaning: sold),
the son of Manasseh,
They were begotten upon the knees of Joseph;
Genesis 50:24
Then Joseph said to his brethren:
“I am about to die,
But God,
He will most certainly visit and muster you,
And He will lead you up,
away from this land,
towards that land,
that which He Himself pledged
to Abraham to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
Genesis 50:25
And Joseph made the sons of Israel pledge absolutely,
saying:
“God will most certainly visit and muster you,
And you will carry up my remains, away from here.”
Genesis 50:26
And Joseph died,
a son of one hundred and ten years;
And they embalmed him,
Then he was set into the (his) sarcophagus,
in Egypt.
