6:9-10
אֵ֚לֶּה תֹּולְדֹ֣ת נֹ֔חַ
These are the histories of Noah:
נֹ֗חַ אִ֥ישׁ צַדִּ֛יק תָּמִ֥ים הָיָ֖ה בְּדֹֽרֹתָ֑יו
Noah, a just man,
was upright within his generation;
אֶת־הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים הִֽתְהַלֶּךְ־נֹֽחַ׃
Noah went about with The True God;
וַיֹּ֥ולֶד נֹ֖חַ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה בָנִ֑ים
And Noah begat three sons:
אֶת־שֵׁ֖ם אֶת־חָ֥ם וְאֶת־יָֽפֶת׃
Shem, Ham and Japheth;
6:11-12
וַתִּשָּׁחֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ לִפְנֵ֣י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים
Now the earth was corrupted
in front of The True God;
וַתִּמָּלֵ֥א הָאָ֖רֶץ חָמָֽס׃
And the earth was filled with violence;
וַיַּ֧רְא אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ וְהִנֵּ֣ה נִשְׁחָ֑תָה
And God observed the earth,
and behold it had been marred;
כִּֽי־הִשְׁחִ֧ית כָּל־בָּשָׂ֛ר
Because all flesh had corrupted
אֶת־דַּרְכֹּ֖ו עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ס
His way upon the earth;
6:13
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֜ים לְנֹ֗חַ
Then God said to Noah:
קֵ֤ץ כָּל־בָּשָׂר֙ בָּ֣א לְפָנַ֔י
“An end of all flesh is coming before Me,
כִּֽי־מָלְאָ֥ה הָאָ֛רֶץ חָמָ֖ס מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם
Because the earth is full of
violence from their presence;
וְהִנְנִ֥י מַשְׁחִיתָ֖ם אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
And behold I am about to exterminate them,
together with the earth.”
6:14
עֲשֵׂ֤ה לְךָ֙ תֵּבַ֣ת עֲצֵי־גֹ֔פֶר
“Make for thee an ark of prepared resinous timber;
קִנִּ֖ים תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֣ה אֶת־הַתֵּבָ֑ה
Compartments shall you make
together with the ark;
וְכָֽפַרְתָּ֥ אֹתָ֛הּ מִבַּ֥יִת וּמִח֖וּץ בַּכֹּֽפֶר׃
and you shall cover it,
from within and from without, with resin;”
6:15
וְזֶ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֖ה אֹתָ֑הּ
“And this is what you shall make it:
שְׁלֹ֧שׁ מֵאֹ֣ות אַמָּ֗ה אֹ֚רֶךְ הַתֵּבָ֔ה
300 cubits, — the length of the ark;
חֲמִשִּׁ֤ים אַמָּה֙ רָחְבָּ֔הּ
50 cubits, — it’s width;
וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אַמָּ֖ה קֹומָתָֽהּ׃
and 30 cubits, — it’s height;”
6:16
צֹ֣הַר ׀ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה לַתֵּבָ֗ה
“A roof shall you make for the ark,
וְאֶל־אַמָּה֙ תְּכַלֶ֣נָּה מִלְמַ֔עְלָה
and to a cubit from above shall you complete it;
וּפֶ֥תַח הַתֵּבָ֖ה בְּצִדָּ֣הּ תָּשִׂ֑ים
and the door of the ark, in it’s side shall you set it;
תַּחְתִּיִּ֛ם שְׁנִיִּ֥ם וּשְׁלִשִׁ֖ים תַּֽעֲשֶֽׂהָ׃
Lower, mezzanine and third shall you make it (the ark);”
6:17
וַאֲנִ֗י הִנְנִי֩ מֵבִ֨יא
“And I, behold I am about to bring
אֶת־הַמַּבּ֥וּל מַ֙יִם֙ עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ
Deluge waters upon the earth,
לְשַׁחֵ֣ת כָּל־בָּשָׂ֗ר
in order to destroy all flesh,
אֲשֶׁר־בֹּו֙ ר֣וּחַ חַיִּ֔ים
where within it is life-force breath,
מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם
from under the heavens;
כֹּ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־בָּאָ֖רֶץ יִגְוָֽע׃
All those which are on the earth shall perish.”
6:18
וַהֲקִמֹתִ֥י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י אִתָּ֑ךְ
“But I will confirm My Covenant with you;
וּבָאתָ֙ אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֔ה
And you shall enter the ark,
אַתָּ֕ה וּבָנֶ֛יךָ
You, and your sons,
וְאִשְׁתְּךָ֥ וּנְשֵֽׁי־בָנֶ֖יךָ אִתָּֽךְ׃
and your wife and the wives of your sons,
together with you;”
6:19
וּמִכָּל־הָ֠חַי מִֽכָּל־בָּשָׂ֞ר
“And from all living, from all flesh,
שְׁנַ֧יִם מִכֹּ֛ל
Two pair from every kind
תָּבִ֥יא אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֖ה
you shall bring into the ark,
לְהַחֲיֹ֣ת אִתָּ֑ךְ
for keeping alive with you;
זָכָ֥ר וּנְקֵבָ֖ה יִֽהְיֽוּ׃
They shall be male together with female;”
6:20
מֵהָעֹ֣וף לְמִינֵ֗הוּ
“From the flying creature according to their kind,
וּמִן־הַבְּהֵמָה֙ לְמִינָ֔הּ
and from the beast according to their kind;
מִכֹּ֛ל רֶ֥מֶשׂ הָֽאֲדָמָ֖ה לְמִינֵ֑הוּ
From every moving thing of the ground,
according to their kind:
שְׁנַ֧יִם מִכֹּ֛ל יָבֹ֥אוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ לְהַֽחֲיֹֽות׃
Two pair from every kind will come to you,
for keeping alive ;”
6:21-22
וְאַתָּ֣ה קַח־לְךָ֗
“And you, take to yourself
מִכָּל־מַֽאֲכָל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יֵֽאָכֵ֔ל
from every food which is eaten,
וְאָסַפְתָּ֖ אֵלֶ֑יךָ
and you shall gather it up to yourself;
וְהָיָ֥ה לְךָ֛ וְלָהֶ֖ם לְאָכְלָֽה׃
And it shall be for you
and for them, for food.”
וַיַּ֖עַשׂ נֹ֑חַ
Then Noah made ready:
כְּ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֥ה אֹתֹ֛ו אֱלֹהִ֖ים
According to everything that God
had commanded him,
כֵּ֥ן עָשָֽׂה׃ ס
Thus he did.
7:1
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ לְנֹ֔חַ
Then the LORD said to Noah:
בֹּֽא־אַתָּ֥ה וְכָל־בֵּיתְךָ֖ אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֑ה
“Enter thou and all thine house
into the ark;
כִּֽי־אֹתְךָ֥ רָאִ֛יתִי
Because you have I regarded
צַדִּ֥יק לְפָנַ֖י בַּדֹּ֥ור הַזֶּֽה׃
as righteous before me, among this generation”.
7:2-3
מִכֹּ֣ל ׀ הַבְּהֵמָ֣ה הַטְּהֹורָ֗ה
“Of every clean/kosher beast,
תִּֽקַּח־לְךָ֛ שִׁבְעָ֥ה שִׁבְעָ֖ה
You shall take to you seven by seven,
אִ֣ישׁ וְאִשְׁתֹּ֑ו
a male and it’s female;
וּמִן־הַבְּהֵמָ֡ה אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹ֣א טְהֹרָ֥ה הִ֛וא
But from the beast, where it is not clean/kosher,
שְׁנַ֖יִם אִ֥ישׁ וְאִשְׁתֹּֽו׃
Two pair, a male and it’s female;
גַּ֣ם מֵעֹ֧וף הַשָּׁמַ֛יִם
Also of the flying creature of the heavens,
שִׁבְעָ֥ה שִׁבְעָ֖ה זָכָ֣ר וּנְקֵבָ֑ה
seven by seven, male and female;
לְחַיֹּ֥ות זֶ֖רַע עַל־פְּנֵ֥י כָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
For preserving offspring,
upon the face of all the earth.”
7:4-5
כִּי֩ לְיָמִ֨ים עֹ֜וד שִׁבְעָ֗ה
“ Except for yet seven days,
אָֽנֹכִי֙ מַמְטִ֣יר עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ
I am going to make it rain upon the earth,
אַרְבָּעִ֣ים יֹ֔ום וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים לָ֑יְלָה
forty days and forty nights,
וּמָחִ֗יתִי אֶֽת־כָּל־הַיְקוּם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔יתִי
And I will wipe away every living being that I made
מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֥י הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃
from upon the face of the ground”.
וַיַּ֖עַשׂ נֹ֑חַ
And Noah made ready:
כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃ ס
According to everything that
the LORD had commanded him.
7:6
וְנֹ֕חַ בֶּן־שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵאֹ֖ות שָׁנָ֑ה
Now Noah was a son of six hundred years,
וְהַמַּבּ֣וּל הָיָ֔ה מַ֖יִם עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
When the Deluge became waters over the earth.
7:7
וַיָּ֣בֹא נֹ֗חַ
And Noah entered,
וּ֠בָנָיו וְאִשְׁתֹּ֧ו וּנְשֵֽׁי־בָנָ֛יו
and his sons, and his wife and his sons’ wives,
אִתֹּ֖ו אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֑ה
together with him, into the ark,
מִפְּנֵ֖י מֵ֥י הַמַּבּֽוּל׃
Away from the face of the waters of the Deluge;
7:8-9
מִן־הַבְּהֵמָה֙ הַטְּהֹורָ֔ה
Of the clean/kosher beast,
וּמִן־הַ֨בְּהֵמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֵינֶ֖נָּה טְהֹרָ֑ה
and of the beast, where it is not clean/kosher;
וּמִ֨ן־הָעֹ֔וף
and so of the flying creature,
וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־רֹמֵ֖שׂ עַל־הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃
and so of every creature that moves upon ground,
שְׁנַ֨יִם שְׁנַ֜יִם
two by two,
בָּ֧אוּ אֶל־נֹ֛חַ אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֖ה זָכָ֣ר וּנְקֵבָ֑ה
they had come to Noah, into the ark,
male and female;
כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־נֹֽחַ׃
According as God had commanded Noah;
7:10
וַֽיְהִ֖י לְשִׁבְעַ֣ת הַיָּמִ֑ים
And so it happened, with reference to the seven days;
וּמֵ֣י הַמַּבּ֔וּל הָי֖וּ עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
And the waters of the Deluge came upon the earth.
7:11
בִּשְׁנַ֨ת שֵׁשׁ־מֵאֹ֤ות שָׁנָה֙ לְחַיֵּי־נֹ֔חַ
In the year, year six hundred,
of the life of Noah,
בַּחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י
In the second month,
בְּשִׁבְעָֽה־עָשָׂ֥ר יֹ֖ום לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ
on day seventeen of the month,
בַּיֹּ֣ום הַזֶּ֗ה
On that day,
נִבְקְעוּ֙ כָּֽל־מַעְיְנֹת֙ תְּהֹ֣ום רַבָּ֔ה
all the fountains of the great deep burst,
וַאֲרֻבֹּ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם נִפְתָּֽחוּ׃
And the hatches of the heavens were opened;
7:12-13
וַֽיְהִ֥י הַגֶּ֖שֶׁם עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
And the rain was over the earth,
אַרְבָּעִ֣ים יֹ֔ום וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים לָֽיְלָה׃
Forty days and forty nights;
בְּעֶ֨צֶם הַיֹּ֤ום הַזֶּה֙ בָּ֣א נֹ֔חַ
At this very point in time Noah had already entered,
וְשֵׁם־וְחָ֥ם וָיֶ֖פֶת בְּנֵי־נֹ֑חַ
also Shem and Ham and Jephet,
the sons of Noah,
וְאֵ֣שֶׁת נֹ֗חַ וּשְׁלֹ֧שֶׁת נְשֵֽׁי־בָנָ֛יו
and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons,
אִתָּ֖ם אֶל־הַתֵּבָֽה׃
together with them, into the ark;
7:14-15
הֵ֜מָּה וְכָל־הַֽחַיָּ֣ה לְמִינָ֗הּ
They, and every living thing according to it’s kind,
וְכָל־הַבְּהֵמָה֙ לְמִינָ֔הּ
and so every beast, according to it’s kind,
וְכָל־הָרֶ֛מֶשׂ
And every creeping thing,
הָרֹמֵ֥שׂ עַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ לְמִינֵ֑הוּ
that moves upon the earth, according to it’s kind;
וְכָל־הָעֹ֣וף לְמִינֵ֔הוּ כֹּ֖ל צִפֹּ֥ור כָּל־כָּנָֽף׃
And every flying creature, according to it’s kind,
everything, bird/every winged creature;
וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־נֹ֖חַ אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֑ה
And so they came to Noah, to the ark;
שְׁנַ֤יִם שְׁנַ֙יִם֙ מִכָּל־הַבָּשָׂ֔ר
Two by two, from all flesh,
אֲשֶׁר־בֹּ֖ו ר֥וּחַ חַיִּֽים׃
where within it is life-force breath;
7:16-17
וְהַבָּאִ֗ים
And having entered,
זָכָ֨ר וּנְקֵבָ֤ה מִכָּל־בָּשָׂר֙
male and female from all flesh,
בָּ֔אוּ
they had gone in,
כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה אֹתֹ֖ו אֱלֹהִ֑ים
according to that which God had commanded him;
וַיִּסְגֹּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בַּֽעֲדֹֽו׃
Then the LORD closed up behind him.
וַֽיְהִ֧י הַמַּבּ֛וּל אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יֹ֖ום עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
And the Deluge took place, forty days, upon the earth,
וַיִּרְבּ֣וּ הַמַּ֗יִם וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־הַתֵּבָ֔ה
And the waters became immense,
and they lifted up the ark,
וַתָּ֖רָם מֵעַ֥ל הָאָֽרֶץ׃
and it went high over the earth;
7:18-19
וַיִּגְבְּר֥וּ הַמַּ֛יִם
And the waters became mighty,
וַיִּרְבּ֥וּ מְאֹ֖ד עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
and increased exceedingly upon the earth;
וַתֵּ֥לֶךְ הַתֵּבָ֖ה
And the ark moved about
עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַמָּֽיִם׃
upon the face of the waters;
וְהַמַּ֗יִם גָּ֥בְר֛וּ מְאֹ֥ד מְאֹ֖ד
And the waters, they prevailed to the utmost degree
עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
upon the earth;
וַיְכֻסּ֗וּ כָּל־הֶֽהָרִים֙ הַגְּבֹהִ֔ים
And all the exalted mountains were covered,
אֲשֶׁר־תַּ֖חַת כָּל־הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
which were below the whole heavens;
7:20
חֲמֵ֨שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֤ה אַמָּה֙ מִלְמַ֔עְלָה
From fifteen cubits upwards,
גָּבְר֖וּ הַמָּ֑יִם
the waters had prevailed;
וַיְכֻסּ֖וּ הֶהָרִֽים׃
and the mountains were covered;
7:21
וַיִּגְוַ֞ע כָּל־בָּשָׂ֣ר ׀
הָרֹמֵ֣שׂ עַל־הָאָ֗רֶץ
And all flesh perished
that moved upon the earth:
בָּעֹ֤וף וּבַבְּהֵמָה֙ וּבַ֣חַיָּ֔ה
As in the flying creature,
and the beast and the animal,
וּבְכָל־הַשֶּׁ֖רֶץ הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
and in every swarming thing
הַשֹּׁרֵ֣ץ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
that was overspreading the earth;
וְכֹ֖ל הָאָדָֽם׃
and the whole of mankind;
7:22
כֹּ֡ל אֲשֶׁר֩ נִשְׁמַת־ר֨וּחַ חַיִּ֜ים בְּאַפָּ֗יו
Everything that had
the breath of the spirit of life in it’s nostrils,
מִכֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֶּחָֽרָבָ֖ה
of all that was on dry land,
מֵֽתוּ׃
it had died.
7:23
וַיִּ֜מַח אֶֽת־כָּל־הַיְק֣וּם ׀
And He wiped out every living being,
אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֗ה
that was upon the face of the ground,
מֵאָדָ֤ם עַד־בְּהֵמָה֙ עַד־רֶ֙מֶשׂ֙
From man to beast, even down to crawling thing
וְעַד־עֹ֣וף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם
and up to the flying creature of the heavens;
וַיִּמָּח֖וּ מִן־הָאָ֑רֶץ
and so they were annihilated from off the earth;
וַיִשָּׁ֧אֶר אַךְ־נֹ֛חַ
And only Noah remained,
וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתֹּ֖ו בַּתֵּבָֽה׃
and those who were with him in the ark;
7:24
וַיִּגְבְּר֥וּ הַמַּ֖יִם עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
And the waters prevailed over the earth:
חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים וּמְאַ֖ת יֹֽום׃ ס
One hundred and fifty days.
8:1
וַיִּזְכֹּ֤ר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־נֹ֔חַ
And God remembered Noah,
וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־הַֽחַיָּה֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה
and all living, including every animal:
אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתֹּ֖ו בַּתֵּבָ֑ה
they that are with him in the ark;
וַיַּעֲבֵ֨ר אֱלֹהִ֥ים ר֙וּחַ֙ עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיָּשֹׁ֖כּוּ הַמָּֽיִם׃
And God caused a wind to go over the earth;
וַיָּשֹׁ֖כּוּ הַמָּֽיִם׃
And the waters lowered;
8:2-3
וַיִּסָּֽכְרוּ֙ מַעְיְנֹ֣ת תְּהֹ֔ום
And the fountains of the deep were shut,
וַֽאֲרֻבֹּ֖ת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם
and also the hatches of the heavens;
וַיִּכָּלֵ֥א הַגֶּ֖שֶׁם מִן־הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃
And so the rain was kept back from the heavens;
וַיָּשֻׁ֧בוּ הַמַּ֛יִם מֵעַ֥ל הָאָ֖רֶץ
And the waters turned back from over the earth,
הָלֹ֣וךְ וָשֹׁ֑וב
flowing continually then returning;
וַיַּחְסְר֣וּ הַמַּ֔יִם
And the waters decreased,
מִקְצֵ֕ה חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים וּמְאַ֖ת יֹֽום׃
after one hundred and fifty days;
8:4-5
וַתָּ֤נַח הַתֵּבָה֙
And the ark rested,
בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י
in the seventh month,
בְּשִׁבְעָה־עָשָׂ֥ר יֹ֖ום לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ
on day seventeen of that month:
עַ֖ל הָרֵ֥י אֲרָרָֽט׃
upon the mountains of Ararat;
וְהַמַּ֗יִם הָיוּ֙ הָלֹ֣וךְ וְחָסֹ֔ור
And the waters had been
flowing and diminishing,
עַ֖ד הַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָֽעֲשִׂירִ֑י
until the tenth month:
בָּֽעֲשִׂירִי֙ בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ
In the tenth month, on the first day of that month,
נִרְא֖וּ רָאשֵׁ֥י הֶֽהָרִֽים׃
the peaks of the mountains had become visible;
8:6
וַֽיְהִ֕י מִקֵּ֖ץ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים יֹ֑ום
And it came to pass after forty days,
וַיִּפְתַּ֣ח נֹ֔חַ אֶת־חַלֹּ֥ון הַתֵּבָ֖ה
That Noah opened the ark window,
אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃
which he had made;
8:7-8
וַיְשַׁלַּ֖ח אֶת־הָֽעֹרֵ֑ב
And he released the raven;
וַיֵּצֵ֤א יָצֹוא֙ וָשֹׁ֔וב
And it went forth continually going out then coming back,
עַד־יְבֹ֥שֶׁת הַמַּ֖יִם מֵעַ֥ל הָאָֽרֶץ׃
until the drying up of the waters from upon the earth;
וַיְשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־הַיֹּונָ֖ה מֵאִתֹּ֑ו
And he sent out the dove, from by him;
לִרְאֹות֙ הֲקַ֣לּוּ הַמַּ֔יִם
In order to see if the waters had subsided,
מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֥י הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃
from over the face of the ground;
8:9
וְלֹֽא־מָצְאָה֩ הַיֹּונָ֨ה מָנֹ֜וחַ
And the dove had not found a resting place
לְכַף־רַגְלָ֗הּ
for the sole of it’s foot,
וַתָּ֤שָׁב אֵלָיו֙ אֶל־הַתֵּבָ֔ה
and it returned to him, to the ark,
כִּי־מַ֖יִם עַל־פְּנֵ֣י כָל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
due to the waters upon the face of the whole earth;
וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יָדֹו֙ וַיִּקָּחֶ֔הָ
And he put forth his hand, and he took it,
וַיָּבֵ֥א אֹתָ֛הּ אֵלָ֖יו אֶל־הַתֵּבָֽה׃
And brought it to himself into the ark;
8:10
וַיָּ֣חֶל עֹ֔וד שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים אֲחֵרִ֑ים
And he waited yet seven further days;
וַיֹּ֛סֶף שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־הַיֹּונָ֖ה מִן־הַתֵּבָֽה׃
And he repeated sending off the dove from the ark;
8:11
וַתָּבֹ֨א אֵלָ֤יו הַיֹּונָה֙ לְעֵ֣ת עֶ֔רֶב
And the dove came to him towards evening time,
וְהִנֵּ֥ה עֲלֵה־זַ֖יִת טָרָ֣ף בְּפִ֑יהָ
And behold, an olive leaf, freshly plucked in its beak!
וַיֵּ֣דַע נֹ֔חַ כִּי־קַ֥לּוּ הַמַּ֖יִם
And Noah knew that the waters had subsided
מֵעַ֥ל הָאָֽרֶץ׃
from over the earth;
8:12
וַיִּיָּ֣חֶל עֹ֔וד שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים אֲחֵרִ֑ים
And he waited still seven further days,
וַיְשַׁלַּח֙ אֶת־הַיֹּונָ֔ה
And he sent the dove away,
וְלֹֽא־יָסְפָ֥ה שׁוּב־אֵלָ֖יו עֹֽוד׃
and it did not repeat returning to him again;
8:13
וַֽ֠יְהִי בְּאַחַ֨ת וְשֵׁשׁ־מֵאֹ֜ות שָׁנָ֗ה
And it came to pass in the 601st year,
בָּֽרִאשֹׁון֙ בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ
in the first month, on day one of that month,
חָֽרְב֥וּ הַמַּ֖יִם מֵעַ֣ל הָאָ֑רֶץ
the waters had dried up from upon the earth;
וַיָּ֤סַר נֹ֙חַ֙ אֶת־מִכְסֵ֣ה הַתֵּבָ֔ה
And Noah removed the ark’s covering,
וַיַּ֕רְא וְהִנֵּ֥ה חָֽרְב֖וּ פְּנֵ֥י הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃
and he looked,
and behold the face of the ground had dried;
8:14
וּבַחֹ֙דֶשׁ֙ הַשֵּׁנִ֔י
And in the second month,
בְּשִׁבְעָ֧ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים יֹ֖ום לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ
on day twenty seven of that month:
יָבְשָׁ֖ה הָאָֽרֶץ׃ ס
the Earth had become dry.
8:15-16
וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־נֹ֥חַ לֵאמֹֽר׃
And God spoke to Noah saying:
צֵ֖א מִן־הַתֵּבָ֑ה
“Go forth from the ark:
אַתָּ֕ה וְאִשְׁתְּךָ֛
You and your wife,
וּבָנֶ֥יךָ וּנְשֵֽׁי־בָנֶ֖יךָ אִתָּֽךְ׃
your sons and your son’s wives,
together with you;”
8:17
כָּל־הַחַיָּ֨ה אֲשֶֽׁר־אִתְּךָ֜ מִכָּל־בָּשָׂ֗ר
“All living that is with you from all flesh,
בָּעֹ֧וף וּבַבְּהֵמָ֛ה
as in the flying creature and the beast,
וּבְכָל־הָרֶ֛מֶשׂ הָרֹמֵ֥שׂ עַל־הָאָ֖רֶץ
and every moving thing that creeps over the earth,
הֹוצֵ֣א (הַיְצֵ֣א ק) אִתָּ֑ךְ
bring out together with you;
וְשָֽׁרְצ֣וּ בָאָ֔רֶץ וּפָר֥וּ וְרָב֖וּ עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
And they shall abound on the earth,
produce offspring and become numerous
upon the earth;”
8:18-19
וַיֵּ֖צֵא־נֹ֑חַ
So Noah went out,
וּבָנָ֛יו וְאִשְׁתֹּ֥ו וּנְשֵֽׁי־בָנָ֖יו אִתֹּֽו׃
And his sons, his wife and his sons’ wives, together with him;
כָּל־הַֽחַיָּ֗ה
All life –
כָּל־הָרֶ֙מֶשׂ֙ וְכָל־הָעֹ֔וף כֹּ֖ל רֹומֵ֣שׂ עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
every creeping creature and every flying creature;
All that move about over the earth;
לְמִשְׁפְּחֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם יָצְא֖וּ מִן־הַתֵּבָֽה׃ ס
By their families they had gone out from the ark.
8:20
וַיִּ֥בֶן נֹ֛חַ מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָ֑ה
And Noah built an altar to the LORD;
וַיִּקַּ֞ח מִכֹּ֣ל ׀ הַבְּהֵמָ֣ה הַטְּהֹורָ֗ה
And he took of every clean/kosher beast,
וּמִכֹּל֙ הָעֹ֣וף הַטָּהֹ֔ר
and of every clean/kosher flying creature,
וַיַּ֥עַל עֹלֹ֖ת בַּמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃
And he offered up whole-burnt sacrifices on the altar;
8:21
וַיָּ֣רַח יְהוָה֮ אֶת־רֵ֣יחַ הַנִּיחֹחַ֒
And the LORD sensed the fragrance of appeasement,
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־לִבֹּ֗ו
and he said inwardly:
לֹֽא־אֹ֠סִף לְקַלֵּ֨ל עֹ֤וד אֶת־הָֽאֲדָמָה֙
“I shall not continue declaring the ground
accursed further
בַּעֲב֣וּר הָֽאָדָ֔ם
because of mankind,
כִּ֠י יֵ֣צֶר לֵ֧ב הָאָדָ֛ם
for the inclination of the heart of man
רַ֖ע מִנְּעֻרָ֑יו
is evil from his youth;
וְלֹֽא־אֹסִ֥ף עֹ֛וד לְהַכֹּ֥ות אֶת־כָּל־חַ֖י
And I shall not continue yet to strike all life
כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִֽׂיתִי׃
according to that which I did;”
8:22
עֹ֖ד כָּל־יְמֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ
“Unto all the days of the earth,
זֶ֡רַע וְ֠קָצִיר וְקֹ֨ר וָחֹ֜ם וְקַ֧יִץ וָחֹ֛רֶף
Seedtime and harvesting, cold and heat,
summer and winter,
וְיֹ֥ום וָלַ֖יְלָה לֹ֥א יִשְׁבֹּֽתוּ׃ ס
day and night, they shall not cease.”
9:1-2
וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶת־נֹ֖חַ וְאֶת־בָּנָ֑יו
And God blessed Noah, and his sons,
וַיֹּ֧אמֶר לָהֶ֛ם
And He said to them:
פְּר֥וּ וּרְב֖וּ וּמִלְא֥וּ אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
“Produce offspring and multiply, and fill the earth.
וּמֹורַאֲכֶ֤ם וְחִתְּכֶם֙ יִֽהְיֶ֔ה עַ֚ל
Now the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon
כָּל־חַיַּ֣ת הָאָ֔רֶץ
every living thing of the earth,
וְעַ֖ל כָּל־עֹ֣וף הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם
and upon every flying creature of the heavens;
בְּכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּרְמֹ֧שׂ הָֽאֲדָמָ֛ה
On everything that moves of the ground,
וּֽבְכָל־דְּגֵ֥י הַיָּ֖ם
and on all the fish of the sea,
בְּיֶדְכֶ֥ם נִתָּֽנוּ׃
into your hand they have been given”;
9:3-4
כָּל־רֶ֙מֶשׂ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הוּא־חַ֔י
“Every creeping thing which is alive,
לָכֶ֥ם יִהְיֶ֖ה לְאָכְלָ֑ה
to you it will be for consumption;
כְּיֶ֣רֶק עֵ֔שֶׂב נָתַ֥תִּי לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־כֹּֽל׃
Just as I had given to you all green herbage:
אַךְ־בָּשָׂ֕ר בְּנַפְשֹׁ֥ו דָמֹ֖ו
But flesh, with its life-blood,
לֹ֥א תֹאכֵֽלוּ׃
ye must not consume.”
9:5
וְאַ֨ךְ אֶת־דִּמְכֶ֤ם לְנַפְשֹֽׁתֵיכֶם֙ אֶדְרֹ֔שׁ
“And surely your blood of your lives
shall I require:
מִיַּ֥ד כָּל־חַיָּ֖ה אֶדְרְשֶׁ֑נּוּ
Through an action of any animal,
I shall require it;
וּמִיַּ֣ד הָֽאָדָ֗ם
And through the action of man,
מִיַּד֙ אִ֣ישׁ אָחִ֔יו
Due to the action of each other,
אֶדְרֹ֖שׁ אֶת־נֶ֥פֶשׁ הָֽאָדָֽם׃
I shall require the life of man;”
9:6
שֹׁפֵךְ֙ דַּ֣ם הָֽאָדָ֔ם
“Whoever is shedding the blood of man,
בָּֽאָדָ֖ם דָּמֹ֣ו יִשָּׁפֵ֑ךְ
by man his blood shall be shed,
כִּ֚י בְּצֶ֣לֶם אֱלֹהִ֔ים
For in the image of God,
עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־הָאָדָֽם׃
He made man.”
9:7
וְאַתֶּ֖ם פְּר֣וּ וּרְב֑וּ
“Now ye, produce offspring and be many;
שִׁרְצ֥וּ בָאָ֖רֶץ וּרְבוּ־בָֽהּ׃ ס
Abound on the earth and increase in it.”
9:8-9
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־נֹ֔חַ
And God said to Noah
וְאֶל־בָּנָ֥יו אִתֹּ֖ו לֵאמֹֽר׃
and to his sons together with him, saying:
אֲנִ֕י הִנְנִ֥י מֵקִ֛ים
“I, behold even I am establishing
אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י אִתְּכֶ֑ם
My covenant with you,
וְאֶֽת־זַרְעֲכֶ֖ם אַֽחֲרֵיכֶֽם׃
And with your offspring, after you;”
9:10
וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־נֶ֤פֶשׁ הַֽחַיָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתְּכֶ֔ם
“And with every living being that is with you,
בָּעֹ֧וף בַּבְּהֵמָ֛ה
as in the flying creature, the beast,
וּֽבְכָל־חַיַּ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ אִתְּכֶ֑ם
and every living creature of the earth,
together with you,
מִכֹּל֙ יֹצְאֵ֣י הַתֵּבָ֔ה
of all that went out of the ark,
לְכֹ֖ל חַיַּ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃
to all the life of the earth;”
9:11
וַהֲקִמֹתִ֤י אֶת־בְּרִיתִי֙ אִתְּכֶ֔ם
“And I have established My Covenant with you,
וְלֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֧ת כָּל־בָּשָׂ֛ר עֹ֖וד
And all flesh shall not be cut off again
מִמֵּ֣י הַמַּבּ֑וּל
by the Deluge waters;
וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֥ה עֹ֛וד מַבּ֖וּל לְשַׁחֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃
And there shall not again be a Deluge
to destroy the earth;”
9:12
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֗ים
And God said,
זֹ֤את אֹֽות־הַבְּרִית֙
“This is the Sign of the Covenant
אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֣י נֹתֵ֗ן
that I Am giving,
בֵּינִי֙ וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם
Between Myself and yourselves,
וּבֵ֛ין כָּל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ חַיָּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתְּכֶ֑ם
and between every living individuality that is with you,
לְדֹרֹ֖ת עֹולָֽם׃
for perpetual generations,”:
9:13-14
אֶת־קַשְׁתִּ֕י נָתַ֖תִּי בֶּֽעָנָ֑ן
“My bow I have placed in the cloud;
וְהָֽיְתָה֙ לְאֹ֣ות בְּרִ֔ית
And it shall be for a Covenant sign,
בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵ֥ין הָאָֽרֶץ׃
between Me and between the earth;
וְהָיָ֕ה בְּעַֽנְנִ֥י עָנָ֖ן עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ
And it shall be,
When I Am forming cloud over the earth,
וְנִרְאֲתָ֥ה הַקֶּ֖שֶׁת בֶּעָנָֽן׃
Then the bow in the cloud will become visible;”
9:15
וְזָכַרְתִּ֣י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֗י
“And then I will remember My Covenant,
אֲשֶׁ֤ר בֵּינִי֙ וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם
that which is between Me and yourselves
וּבֵ֛ין כָּל־נֶ֥פֶשׁ חַיָּ֖ה בְּכָל־בָּשָׂ֑ר
and between every living entity, as in all flesh;
וְלֹֽא־יִֽהְיֶ֨ה עֹ֤וד הַמַּ֙יִם֙ לְמַבּ֔וּל
And it shall not happen again –
the waters of a Deluge,
לְשַׁחֵ֖ת כָּל־בָּשָֽׂר׃
to destroy all flesh;”
9:16
וְהָיְתָ֥ה הַקֶּ֖שֶׁת בֶּֽעָנָ֑ן
“When the bow shall occur in the cloud;
וּרְאִיתִ֗יהָ לִזְכֹּר֙ בְּרִ֣ית עֹולָ֔ם
Then I shall regard it to remember the Perpetual Covenant,
בֵּ֣ין אֱלֹהִ֔ים וּבֵין֙ כָּל־נֶ֣פֶשׁ חַיָּ֔ה
between God and every living entity,
בְּכָל־בָּשָׂ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
with all flesh, that is upon the earth;”
9:17
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־נֹ֑חַ
“And God said to Noah:
זֹ֤את אֹֽות־הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֲקִמֹ֔תִי
This is the Sign of the Covenant which I have appointed,
בֵּינִ֕י וּבֵ֥ין כָּל־בָּשָׂ֖ר
between Me and all flesh
אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃ פ
that is upon the earth.”
