Genesis 17:1
וַיְהִ֣י אַבְרָ֔ם בֶּן־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְתֵ֣שַׁע שָׁנִ֑ים
Now Avram became a son of ninety nine years;
וַיֵּרָ֨א יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־אַבְרָ֗ם
And the LORD appeared to Avram,
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙
And He said to him,
אֲנִי־אֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֔י
“I AM God Omnipotent-Sufficient;
הִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ לְפָנַ֖י וֶהְיֵ֥ה תָמִֽים׃
Walk thou before Me, and may thou be whole-hearted!”
Genesis 17:2
וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה בְרִיתִ֖י בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ
“Then I will place My Covenant
between Me and between you,
וְאַרְבֶּ֥ה אוֹתְךָ֖ בִּמְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃
And I will cause you to multiply
by exceeding greatness.”
Genesis 17:3-4
וַיִּפֹּ֥ל אַבְרָ֖ם עַל־פָּנָ֑יו
And Avram fell upon his face.
וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתּ֛וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר׃
Then God spoke with him, saying:
אֲנִ֕י הִנֵּ֥ה בְרִיתִ֖י אִתָּ֑ךְ
“I AM. Here is My Covenant with you:
וְהָיִ֕יתָ לְאַ֖ב הֲמ֥וֹן גּוֹיִֽם׃
Even you shall become father
of a multitude of nations;”
Genesis 17:5
וְלֹא־יִקָּרֵ֥א ע֛וֹד אֶת־שִׁמְךָ֖ אַבְרָ֑ם
“And no longer shall your name be called
Avram (exalted father);
וְהָיָ֤ה שִׁמְךָ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם
But your name shall be Avraham
(father of a great multitude),
כִּ֛י אַב־הֲמ֥וֹן גּוֹיִ֖ם נְתַתִּֽיךָ׃
For I have appointed you as father of a multitude of nations;”
Genesis 17:6
וְהִפְרֵתִ֤י אֹֽתְךָ֙ בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֔ד
“And so I will make you fruitful by exceeding greatness,
וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ לְגוֹיִ֑ם
and I will grant you to become nations;
וּמְלָכִ֖ים מִמְּךָ֥ יֵצֵֽאוּ׃
And kings shall go forth from you;”
Genesis 17:7
וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֜י בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵינֶ֗ךָ
“And I will establish My Covenant,
between Me and between you,
וּבֵ֨ין זַרְעֲךָ֧ אַחֲרֶ֛יךָ לְדֹרֹתָ֖ם לִבְרִ֣ית עוֹלָ֑ם
And between your seed after you,
for their generations as a Perpetual Covenant,
לִהְי֤וֹת לְךָ֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים
To be God to you,
וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֖ אַחֲרֶֽיךָ׃
and to your seed after you;”
Genesis 17:8
וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְ֠ךָ
“And I shall give you,
וּלְזַרְעֲךָ֨ אַחֲרֶ֜יךָ אֵ֣ת ׀ אֶ֣רֶץ מְגֻרֶ֗יךָ
and to your seed after you,
the land of your sojournings,
אֵ֚ת כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן לַאֲחֻזַּ֖ת עוֹלָ֑ם
the whole land of Cana’an,
for an Everlasting Possession;
וְהָיִ֥יתִי לָהֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִֽים׃
And I shall be their God.”
Genesis 17:9
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֔ם
Now God said to Avraham,
וְאַתָּ֖ה אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֣י תִשְׁמֹ֑ר
“Now you shall maintain My Covenant,
אַתָּ֛ה וְזַרְעֲךָ֥ אֽ͏ַחֲרֶ֖יךָ לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃
You, and your seed after you, for their generations.”
Genesis 17:10
זֹ֣את בְּרִיתִ֞י אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּשְׁמְר֗וּ בֵּינִי֙ וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם
“This is My Covenant which ye shall keep,
between Me and between you,
וּבֵ֥ין זַרְעֲךָ֖ אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ
and between your seed after you: —
הִמּ֥וֹל לָכֶ֖ם כָּל־זָכָֽר׃
Be circumcised, every male of you all;”
Genesis 17:11
וּנְמַלְתֶּ֕ם אֵ֖ת בְּשַׂ֣ר עָרְלַתְכֶ֑ם
“And ye shall be circumcised,
the flesh of your foreskins;
וְהָיָה֙ לְא֣וֹת בְּרִ֔ית
And it shall be for a Sign of the Covenant,
בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵינֵיכֶֽם׃
between Me and between you;”
Genesis 17:12
וּבֶן־שְׁמֹנַ֣ת יָמִ֗ים
“And a son of eight days,
יִמּ֥וֹל לָכֶ֛ם כָּל־זָכָ֖ר לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶ֑ם
belonging to yourselves shall be circumcised,
every male for your generations;
יְלִ֣יד בָּ֔יִת וּמִקְנַת־כֶּ֙סֶף֙ מִכֹּ֣ל בֶּן־נֵכָ֔ר
One borne of a household,
even one purchased with money,
from any son of a foreigner,
אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹ֥א מִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֖ הֽוּא׃
who is not of your seed himself;”
Genesis 17:13
הִמּ֧וֹל ׀ יִמּ֛וֹל יְלִ֥יד בּֽ͏ֵיתְךָ֖ וּמִקְנַ֣ת כַּסְפֶּ֑ךָ
“Most surely shall he be circumcised:
One borne of your household,
or one purchased with your money;
וְהָיְתָ֧ה בְרִיתִ֛י בִּבְשַׂרְכֶ֖ם לִבְרִ֥ית עוֹלָֽם׃
And My Covenant shall be in your flesh,
for a Perpetual Covenant;”
Genesis 17:14
וְעָרֵ֣ל ׀ זָכָ֗ר
“Now a male having a foreskin,
אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יִמּוֹל֙ אֶת־בְּשַׂ֣ר עָרְלָת֔וֹ
Who will not be circumcised,
the flesh of his foreskin,
וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִ֖וא מֵעַמֶּ֑יהָ
Also that same person shall be cut off from his people;
אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י הֵפַֽר׃ ס
He has declared My Covenant void.”
Genesis 17:15
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֔ם שָׂרַ֣י אִשְׁתְּךָ֔
Then God said to Avraham: “Sarai your wife,
לֹא־תִקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמָ֖הּ שָׂרָ֑י
Do not call her name Sarai (my princess),
כִּ֥י שָׂרָ֖ה שְׁמָֽהּ׃
For her name is now Sarah (Princess);”
Genesis 17:16
וּבֵרַכְתִּ֣י אֹתָ֔הּ וְגַ֨ם נָתַ֧תִּי מִמֶּ֛נָּה לְךָ֖ בֵּ֑ן
“And I will bless her;
and moreover I have granted you a son from her;
וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֙יהָ֙ וְהָֽיְתָ֣ה לְגוֹיִ֔ם
And I will bless her and she shall become nations;
מַלְכֵ֥י עַמִּ֖ים מִמֶּ֥נָּה יִהְיֽוּ׃
Kings of peoples shall be from her.”
Genesis 17:17
וַיִּפֹּ֧ל אַבְרָהָ֛ם עַל־פָּנָ֖יו וַיִּצְחָ֑ק
Then Avraham fell on his face,
and he laughed;
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בְּלִבּ֗וֹ
And said in his heart:
הַלְּבֶ֤ן מֵאָֽה־שָׁנָה֙ יִוָּלֵ֔ד
“Is one born to a 100-year old son,
וְאִ֨ם־שָׂרָ֔ה הֲבַת־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה תֵּלֵֽד׃
and Sarah, — will a 90-year old daughter give birth?”
Genesis 17:18
וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶל־הֽ͏ָאֱלֹהִ֑ים
Then Avraham said to the True God:
ל֥וּ יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל יִחְיֶ֥ה לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃
“Oh that Ishmael will be the one of Your Presence!”
Genesis 17:19
וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲבָל֙ שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֗
Then God replied:
“Truly, Sarah your wife,
יֹלֶ֤דֶת לְךָ֙ בֵּ֔ן
She is going to bare you a son;
וְקָרָ֥אתָ אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יִצְחָ֑ק
And you shall call his name Isaac (He will laugh);
וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֥י אִתּ֛וֹ
And I will establish My Covenant with him,
לִבְרִ֥ית עוֹלָ֖ם לְזַרְע֥וֹ אַחֲרָֽיו׃
as an Everlasting Covenant, for his seed after him.”
Genesis 17:20
וּֽלְיִשְׁמָעֵאל֘ שְׁמַעְתִּיךָ֒
“Moreover concerning Ishmael, I have heard you.”
הִנֵּ֣ה ׀ בֵּרַ֣כְתִּי אֹת֗וֹ
“Behold, I have blessed him,
וְהִפְרֵיתִ֥י אֹת֛וֹ וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֥י אֹת֖וֹ בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד
and so I will make him fruitful and make him vast,
by exceeding greatness;
שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֤ר נְשִׂיאִם֙ יוֹלִ֔יד
He shall beget twelve princes,
וּנְתַתִּ֖יו לְג֥וֹי גָּדֽוֹל׃
and I shall make him into a great nation.”
Genesis 17:21
וְאֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י אָקִ֣ים אֶת־יִצְחָ֑ק
“But My Covenant will I establish with Isaac,
אֲשֶׁר֩ תֵּלֵ֨ד לְךָ֤ שָׂרָה֙ לַמּוֹעֵ֣ד הַזֶּ֔ה
Whom Sarah shall bear for you,
at the time appointed,
בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה הָאַחֶֽרֶת׃
during next year.”
Genesis 17:22
וַיְכַ֖ל לְדַבֵּ֣ר אִתּ֑וֹ
When He had finished speaking with him,
וַיַּ֣עַל אֱלֹהִ֔ים מֵעַ֖ל אַבְרָהָֽם׃
Then God ascended from near Avraham.
Genesis 17:23
וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בְּנ֗וֹ
Then Avraham took Ishmael his son,
וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־יְלִידֵ֤י בֵיתוֹ֙ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־מִקְנַ֣ת כַּסְפּ֔וֹ
And all those born of his house,
and everyone purchased with his money,
כָּל־זָכָ֕ר בְּאַנְשֵׁ֖י בֵּ֣ית אַבְרָהָ֑ם
Every male among the individuals of the house of Avraham;
וַיָּ֜מָל אֶת־בְּשַׂ֣ר עָרְלָתָ֗ם
And he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins,
בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה
on that selfsame day;
כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים׃
According to that which God had spoken with him.
Genesis 17:24
וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם בֶּן־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וָתֵ֖שַׁע שָׁנָ֑ה
And Avraham is a son of ninety-nine years,
בְּהִמֹּל֖וֹ בְּשַׂ֥ר עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃
When he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin;
Genesis 17:25
וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בְּנ֔וֹ בֶּן־שְׁלֹ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה
And Ishmael his son, a son of thirteen years,
בְּהִ֨מֹּל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת בְּשַׂ֥ר עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃
When he is circumcised, the flesh of his foreskin.
Genesis 17:26
בְּעֶ֙צֶם֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה נִמּ֖וֹל אַבְרָהָ֑ם
On that selfsame day had Avraham become circumcised;
וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל בְּנֽוֹ׃
And also Ishmael his son.
Genesis 7:27
וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁ֤י בֵיתוֹ֙ יְלִ֣יד בָּ֔יִת
And so all the men of his household born in the house,
וּמִקְנַת־כֶּ֖סֶף מֵאֵ֣ת בֶּן־נֵכָ֑ר
or purchased with money,
from a son of a foreigner:
נִמֹּ֖לוּ אִתּֽוֹ׃ פ
They were circumcised with him.
