2:4
These are the histories of Heaven and Earth,
when they were being created,
At a time the LORD God was preparing
Earth and Heaven,
2:5
and every bush of the field,
before it would be on the earth,
and every grass of the field,
before it would spring up:
For the LORD God had not
made it rain upon the earth,
and there was no man to work the soil:
2:6
Now a mist-stream
used to arise from the earth,
and it would irrigate the whole face of the ground.
2:7
And Jehovah God formed man,
as matter from the ground,

And He breathed into his nostrils life-force breath,
and man became a living being:
2:8
And Jehovah God planted
a garden in Eden (Land of Bliss) in advance;
And there he placed man,
whom He had formed:
2:9
And Jehovah God caused to grow from the ground
every tree being pleasant to sight,
and good for food;
And the Tree of Life, in the midst of the garden,
and also the Tree of Knowing Good and Evil:
2:10
Now a river was flowing out of Eden
to water the garden;
and from there it divided,
And it became four heads:
2:11-12
The name of the first was Pishon (spreading),
It was flowing around
the whole sand-land (Havilah),
There where gold was;
Now the gold of that land was good;
Bdellium was there,
and onyx stone;
2:13
And the name of the second river was Gihon (bursting forth/bubbling),
It was flowing around
the whole land of Cush;
2:14
And the name of the third river was Hiddekel (Tigris/rapid);
It was going east of Assyria;
And the fourth river,
it was the Euphrates
(the Great River: Akkadian Purattu):
2:15
And the LORD God took the man;
And He placed him in the Garden of Eden
To work it, and to take care of it:
2:16
And the LORD God laid explicit instruction
upon the man, saying:
“from any tree of the garden
you may eat at will;”
2:17
“But from the tree of Knowing Good and Evil,
You must not eat from off it;
For on the day of your eating from off of it,
you shall certainly die.”
2:18
And the LORD God said:
“It is not good, the man being by himself;
I will prepare help for him, as his opposite.”
2:19
And the LORD God formed out of the ground
every living creature of the field
and every flying creature of the heavens
And he brought it to the man
to see what he would name it;
And whatsoever the man would name a living entity,
that was it’s name:
2:20
And the man gave names to every beast,
and to the flying creatures of the heavens,
and to every living creature of the field;
But with regard to the man,
he had not found help as his opposite:
2:21
And the LORD God made a deep sleep fall
upon the man, and he slept;
And He took one of his sides,
And He closed up flesh in it’s place;
2:22
And the LORD God built the side
that He had taken from the man,
into a woman;
And He brought her to the man;
2:23
Then the man said:
“This time, bone, from my bones!
and flesh, from my flesh!
This one, she will be called ‘Woman’,
for from man was this one taken!”
2:24
Therefore, a man shall leave
his father and his mother
and shall cleave to his wife,
and they shall become one flesh.
2:25
And the two of them were naked,
the man and his wife,
But they did not feel ashamed.

3:1
Now the serpent had become sly,
Out of every living creature of the field
that the LORD God had made;
And he said to the woman:
“Did God really say that ye cannot eat,
from every tree of the garden?”
3:2
Then the woman said to the serpent:
“From the garden tree fruit we may eat:”
3:3
“But from the fruit of the tree,
that which is in the middle of the garden,
God has said:
‘Ye must not eat from it,
and ye must not touch it,
Lest ye should die!’”
3:4
Then the serpent said to the woman:
“Ye shall certainly not die!”
3:5
“On the contrary, God knows
that on the day of your eating from it,
then your eyes shall be opened;
And ye shall become like gods,
knowing good and evil!”
3:6
When the woman saw
that the tree was good for food
and that it was a delight to the eyes
and the tree was desirable in order to give insight
Then she took of its fruit and she ate;
and she gave also to her husband,
in company with her, and he ate;
3:7
And the eyes of the two of them were opened,
Then they knew that they were naked;
So they stuck together fig foliage,
and they made loincloths for themselves.
3:8
And they heard the sound of the LORD God
walking to and fro in the garden
at the breeze of the day;
And the man and his wife kept themselves hidden,
from the presence of the LORD God,
in the midst of the trees of the garden.
3:9
And the LORD God called to the man,
And He said to him “where are you!?”
3:10
And he said,
“I heard your sound in the garden;
And I was afraid, because I am naked,
and I hid myself.”
3:11
And He said “Who told you that you are naked!?”
“From the tree, that which I commanded you
not to eat from, have you eaten from it!?”
3:12
Then the man said:
“The woman whom You gave standing with me,
She gave me from that tree, and I ate.”
3:13
And the LORD God said to the woman:
“What is this you have done!?”
Then the woman said:
“The serpent deceived me,
and I ate.”
3:14
Then the LORD God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
you are cursed more than every beast,
and every living creature of the field;
Upon your belly shall you go,
and ground-matter shall you consume,
all the days of your existence.”
3:15
“And I am setting hostility
between you and between the woman,
and between your seed and between her Seed;
He Himself shall crush you as to the head,
and you yourself shall crush Him as to the Heel.”
3:16
To the woman He said:
“I will greatly increase
your birth-pains and your pregnancies, —
In pain shall you bring forth children;
And your longings for your husband shall increase, —
And he shall rule over you.”
3:17
Now to Adam He said:
“Because you listened to the voice of your wife,
and you ate from the tree,
of which I had commanded you, saying:
‘you must not eat from it’:
The ground is bound under curse on account of you/for your sake,
In toil shall you partake of it,
all the days of your life;”
3:18
“And it shall make both thorn and thistle
spring up for you;
Furthermore you shall eat the green plant of the field;”
3:19
“By the sweat of your face shall you eat bread,
Until your return to the ground,
Because from out of it you were taken;
For ground-matter you are,
and to ground-matter shall you return.”
3:20
And the man gave his wife the name Eve;
Because she became mother of all living.
3:21
And the LORD God made
for Adam and for his wife,
garments of skin,
and He clothed them.
